Akanksha Chaudhary
At a stage when most girls are busy preparing for competitive exams in medicine or management, Akanksha Chaudhary of Rohtak has been engrossed in penning poetry. At present a student of political science (honours) at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, this budding poetess is moved by the plight of the poor and downtrodden, particularly rural women and labourers. Apart from voicing her concerns and feelings through poetry, she contributes her bit for the uplift of the have-nots. She has a flair for photography too. Akanksha does not lag behind in studies either. “She is quite different from other girls her age,” says her mother Dr Swarnlata, who teaches public administration at the Government College, Rohtak. “The story is the same; I live under nobody’s name…I am but one, a soul perhaps, a sufferer nevertheless…” gives a fair insight into her poetic self. While a number of her poems and other write-ups have been published in The Tribune, besides other papers and magazines, an anthology of her pictures and poems is ready for publication under the title “The Unspoken Thoughts”. As of now, she is writing a novel on child marriage.

Gurpreet Singh Bhullar
Serial killers are a terror among the masses. But these special criminals are themselves terrified of this cop. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar of the Punjab Police, posted as SSP, Ludhiana-Rural police district, is the cop who nabbed the two serial killers that had spread panic among the residents in Jalandhar and Jagraon areas. Bhullar was the brain behind the arrest Darbara Singh of Jalandhar and Mewa Singh of Hansa Kalan village in Jagraon, the two serial killers to have struck in Punjab in recent times. He had led the operation against Darbara Singh in Jalandhar as the SSP and similarly, laid the trap for the arrest of Mewa Singh as SSP of Ludhiana-Rural. Though Mewa Singh was allegedly active six months before Bhullar assumed office, the police had failed to nab him. An alumnus of St. Stepehens College, New Delhi, Bhullar carefully studied the modus operandi of these killers and gave crucial leads to his staff. He had told them to keep an eye on alcoholics and addicts of the area.
