I have just completed my BCom. What kind of jobs would be relevant for me? — Girish Handa A One relevant job could be to work as a research analyst wherein you are involved in financial research, evaluating the performance of various sectors. Or could be in sales and marketing of financial services in a bank. While work-experience is not mandatory before you go for an MBA in many business schools in india, it is incerasingly turning into an advantage during the selection process. Although a good academic record was considered sufficient to be admitted to a reputed institute until a few years ago, today, one finds an increasing number of B-schools jumping onto the work experience bandwagon. Prospective students, with a solid work record, are given precedence over fresh graduates. Understandably, people with work experience tend to have more practical knowledge, and thus, can absorb the new information better and quicker. For example, freshers have been often found to be less receptive to management and people-related subjects such as organisational behaviour than their experienced counterparts. Also, companies prefer people with work ex in their functional areas because they have a lot more to offer and build a better gene pool in the organisation. But too much experience can also go against you — particularly if it’s in an industry other than that of the recruiting company. Some companies at times, prefer freshers for their energy, enthusiasm and trainability. Also a stint at work will help you face the interview panel with a convincing answer to “Why an MBA?” While participating in case-studies, you can relate better to managerial and professional problems if you have come across similar situations in real life. Work-ex also bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. It gives you clarity of goals and a sharper overview and perspective of what’s happening in the marketplace. All told, it will also help you extract greater value from your MBA. Airing your ambition Q What is the eligibility for ATCs who man the towers at airports? When are senior assistant positions advertised? — Mayank Jain A The Air Traffic Controllers’ Guild (India), an association of ATCs, has asked for scrapping the post of Senior Assistants saying that the SA’s are technically ill-equipped to handle the new updated technologies used by ATCs the world over. The recommended point of entry is at the relatively senior post of Junior Executive ATC. The basic eligibility for which is a Degree in Electronics /Telecomm / Radio Engineering or a pass in Sections A and B of the Exams of Institution of Engineers with the above mentioned subjects. You can also apply for this post if you have cleared the Graduate Membership Exams of IETE (India) or the Associate Membership exam Parts II and III sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India (Electronics)/ Avionics as a group). MSc degree-holders with Physics or Maths as principal subjects are also eligible. Both physical and mental fitness is paramount. The mandatory physical requirements are listed in Annexure-1 of Personnel Licensing of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s statuette (www.icao.int). Selection is typically done through a written test and interview. You will be paid a consolidated stipend of Rs. 7500/- p.m. during the training period after which you will be placed in the regular pay scale (Rs10, 000 p.m.). Prepare to be posted anywhere in the country. I hope you are below 30. There are approximately 1000 ATCs in the coutry presently and there is a demand for as many more. Your core responsibilities as an Air Traffic Controller, will involve maintaining an orderly flow of traffic and airspace management. Qualified ATCOs (Air Traffic Control Officers) with several years of experience can go on to become Executive Director, Air Traffic Management. Depending on your overall ratings and experience you can draw between Rs 60-70,000 pm. Watch out for the notification issued by the “HR Cell, Airports Authority of India, Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi, 110003 (www.airportsindia.org.in). All ATCs are recruited by the AAI for posting at various civilian airports. Indian graduates can also join the IAF as ATCs (in the Permanent Commission for Men or Short Service Commission for Women). Careers in chemistry Q What are the job prospects for someone who wants to do graduation or postgraduation in chemistry? — Kaushik Bharti A
Chemistry is a wide-ranging science concerned with the properties, both macroscopic and microscopic, of materials of all types, inorganic, organic and biological, and also with all aspects of change. It involves, for example, the investigation of structures and of the mechanisms of chemical transformations, also naturally, the synthesis of new compounds (often with a technological purpose). Chemistry underpins the conceptual framework and methodology of biochemistry and molecular medicine, and is at the heart of a variety of major industrial activities. If you have a scientific bent and chemistry is your favourite subject, that’s enough reason in itself to study chemistry at university. You’ll find it challenging and rewarding in many different ways, and there are exciting, wide-ranging employment prospects afterwards. As the central scientific subject, chemistry provides an excellent medium for developing your critical faculties and intellect. It also develops a variety of important transferable skills that will serve you well whatever your subsequent choice of career. Should you aspire to be a research chemist, the opportunities after graduation are almost limitless. Matter of marks Q My daughter has passed the Class X exam, but her results are far below expectations — ours, hers as well as of her teachers. What is worse is that her school is denying admission to her in Class XI, leave alone allowing her to join her desired stream. What should we do? — N. K. Sondhi A It is not clear from your question what percent your daughter has scored, what stream she wants to join or where her school is located. If she has scored far below her present capabilities, probably a re-evaluation of her answer sheets is in order. Act fast, before the deadline is over. Beyond that, I am listing some of the rulings of the courts and the government which, hopefully, may show you the way out of the conundrum. The Supreme Court has ruled that a school should provide admission to its regular students who passed the exams, before considering any other students. The Delhi High Court has ruled that the board, not pre-board results should be the basis for determining the subjects in Class XI. According to instructions of the Directorate of Education, Delhi, any student securing more than 60 per cent in Class X is entitled to admission in the Science stream. You may be somewhat hesitant to take any action to redress the wrongs done to your daughter. But do remember that Swami Vivekanand considered a victim of injustice no less culpable than the victimiser if the former refuses to act against the injustice. Doctoring in Canada Q I am a doctor. What are the rules pertaining to migrating to Canada as a skilled worker? — Bimal Juneja A To obtain an immigrant visa in the skilled worker category, you must meet the minimum work and funds requirements and get a minimal score out of 100 (67 presently) on six selection factors including education, English and French language ability, work experience, age, a job offer in Canada, and adaptability. You must have a minimum of one year of full-time work experience or equivalent part-time experience and have enough funds (whether personal and/or as salary from pre-arranged job offer) for your family to survive initial six months in Canada. For your education, you get a maximum of 25 points (highest for 17 or more years of full-time education or PHD) and for ability to speak, listen, read and write English and French, 24 points. For your work-experience, you get a maximum of 21 points (highest for those who have worked 4 or more years full-time) and for age, 10 points (highest for those in active working age group 21-49 years). A pre-arranged job-offer in Canada will get you another 10 points. Adaptability is a category consisting of a jumble of characteristics measuring whether you will be able to adapt to a life in Canada. Here you score points for an educated spouse, and whether you and/or your spouse have close relatives or have had prior work and education in Canada. Your pre-arranged job offer again adds points for adaptability, whose maximum is limited to 10. Web of teaching Q I have been teaching in a school for the last 3 years. I’m very keen to teach in US schools. I do some online teaching. Will that qualify me for recruitment in the US? — Mrinal Karnik A Indian teachers are respected worldwide and have a lot to offer the world, the USA included. Moreover, they have a reputation of being well-trained, educated and professional. That is why, Visiting International Faculty (VIF), which is the largest United States international exchange programme for teachers worldwide, sponsored 22 Indian teachers to visit the USA in the 2006-07 academic year. VIF educators in the USA teach more than 20 subjects, including elementary education, a variety of languages, English, mathematics, science, special education, etc. Mathematics, science and special education are subject areas in regular demand and Indian teachers fit the bill perfectly. I suggest you apply for this programme. Online tutoring from India does not give teachers the same perspective that classroom teaching does. It is vital that teachers from India actually face American classrooms. Harassed by boss Q I am not clear about verbal and non-verbal forms of harassment. I’m asking because my supervisor constantly cracks vulgar jokes that makes me very uncomfortable. He keeps referring to me as “baby” and ‘sweetheart’ in front of my other colleagues. — R P A Sexual harassment implies any action that is not liked or perceived to have sexual undertones by the other person. It could mean gestures, jokes with sexual undertones told to another colleague but within the person’s earshot, non-verbal gestures – facial, hand etc. – all of which fall under the category of sexual harassment. The ‘baby’ and ‘sweetheart’ bit may be a harmless figure of speech which he uses for his wife/girlfriend, but definitely find no place in the workplace. Do tell him politely but firmly that you strongly object to his terms of endearment If he refuses to mend his ways, feel free to report him to the management.
