In view of the great demand overseas for housemaids and home nurses, the government is planning to launch courses for them that besides adding value to their skills will make them aware about their rights. "The (Labour) Ministry is contemplating about evolving a strategy along with the state governments to start some demand-driven courses like that for housemaids and home nurses," Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes said in New Delhi recently. The Ministry has felt the need for launching such courses in view of the demand for the workforce being made by other countries. "During my recent visit to Geneva for the International Labour Conference, it was conveyed to me by the US representative that there was an urgent need of around one million home nurses in America to take care of the ageing population," Fernandes said. "Similar demands were raised for skilled housemaids in Kuwait," he added. The deliberations on launching the courses are at a very preliminary stage, Fernandes said. He said it was important that some additional skills are imparted in the workforce. "For example, if a maid has some knowledge about the first-aid and emergency responses, then it adds to the merit. “Our training would look into these aspects too,” Fernandes added. The workers also have to be made aware of their rights, he said.Apart from the skills, the government also feels that the workforce also needed to be made aware against any possible exploitation by the employer, Fernandes said.
