Malaria
Admin wings at cross purposes

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 22
Various wings of the Chandigarh administration seem to be working at cross purposes as far as the control of malaria in the city is concerned.

If a communication by the assistant director health (malaria) to Chandigarh Tribune in connection with a recent story on the fear of malaria outbreak is any indication, there is no coordination among various wings of the administration even as the monsoon is round the corner.

The directorate of national vector-borne disease control programme is carrying out regular anti-larval and vector-control measures at weekly intervals at all such water collections.Besides, sanitary inspectors and other staff are going house to house for checking and treatment of “mosquito genic situation” i.e. water coolers, discarded tyres, containers and overhead tanks.

“So far as open water collection in the city is concerned, the directorate has already requested chief engineers of the Chandigarh administration and the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh(MCC) for dewatering, de-weeding and de-silting of those areas to reduce the mosquito-breeding potential,” according to the communication.

In fact, underlining the "urgent need for flushing out water in low-lying areas" the assistant director tries to put the onus on the public health department.

“Since the de-watering of larger water bodies is the prime duty of the public health department, an early action before the monsoon is required to be taken by the administration and the MC,” it said.

The assistant director listed various measures undertaken by the department to control malaria and other vector-borne diseases.

Chandigarh Tribune had reported that the accumulated water in Sector 31 was an open invitation to mosquitoes, which could lead to malaria and other water-borne
diseases.

Food fortification OK with admin
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 22
The Chandigarh administration has principally agreed to the concept of food fortification proposed by the Chandigarh Roller Flour Mills Association.

A meeting under the chairmanship of UT home secretary Krishna Mohan was held at the UT Secretariat here today to discuss the issue. The need for food fortification was felt due to the problem of iron deficiency and its ill-effects.

It has been found that when someone is found to be anaemic, the deficiency is already severe and entrenched.

Even frank anaemia is not easy to detect without blood test. Most people do not recognise anaemia as a problem, and certainly do not link it with iron deficiency. The initiative is based upon a similar model followed by Gujarat and implemented in the form of an elaborate and comprehensive food fortification programme, which met with huge success.
