Faculty development programme concludes

Mandi Gobindgarh, June 23
A three-day faculty development programme "Higher Education in Globalised Era" organised by Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Sciences, Mandi Gobindgarh, in collaboration with the Government Wairrakki Institute, New Zealand, concluded here today. Fifty faculty members from different colleges participated in the programme.

The diploma courses of business management, tourism, cookery, computer networking, designing, web mastery, multimedia, agriculture and automotive engineering were discussed at length by a team comprising head- Hospitality and Cookery Jeff Herd, head-Computers Linda Fraser, head-Business and Tourism Roger Jenner, head-Agriculture Alex Johnsom and director Special Projects Pardeep Singh.

Talking about a course during the programme they said any student who has passed Class XII examination will be first taught and trained at Desh Bhagat Institute for six months and thereafter he or she will be sent to Wairrakki Institute, New Zealand, for studying in a one-year course where he or she can seek coaching and training on "Earn and Learn” basis. In this way they can easily make up their lodging, boarding and fees. The tentative fee structure is Rs 75,000 for the six-month course in India and Rs 4.5 lakh for the study duration of the yearlong course in New Zealand. Visa arrangements will be made by the Desh Bhagat Institute.

Speaking on the occasion, director of the institute Shalini Gupta informed that this is the first Institute in the country to be visited by a team from New Zealand. She further said that the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, New Zealand, had also expressed its desire for a long-term association with the Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Sciences.

‘Demand for computer engineers increasing’

Jetking organised a “Nayee Disha 2007-a pathway to career” at Nehru Siddhant Kendra here today.

As many as 500 students were enlightened about career in Computer Stream. Amit Sharma, regional manager, Jetking, had imparted in depth knowledge to the students about the present as well as the future prospect about the computer hardware and networking industry.

He also made the students aware that how the demand of trained computer hardware and networking engineer was growing at an exponential rate. He said the main aim at Jetking was to groom student to the optimum requirement of the industry.

1000 attend Diabetes Expo at hospital

Ludhiana, June 23
The first day of Diabetes Expo 2007 was more successful than anticipated at SPS Apollo Hospital here today with more than 1000 persons attended the expo.

Dr Gurpreet Singh, endocrinologist, who is also the chief organiser of the Expo said this was one of the busiest diabetic trade shows. “We anticipate a larger expo in 2008 in both attendance and vendor participation”, he said while, adding that this expo had attracted many new exhibitors and buyers, which was very encouraging.

Dr Gurpreet gave a lecture on basic Diabetes Education and Dr Ramanbir highlighted the importance of Diabetes Self Management in the Public Awareness Forums, which were organised by them, help create awareness and educate the visitors about diabetes.

The visitors in the expo had come from far off areas in Punjab and also neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Sugar tests of the visitors were performed free of cost by the hospital. Various diets were also available for diabetic patients.

The Department of Endocrinology announced that the hospital will shortly be starting a diabetic helpline for the people of Punjab and also continue to hold such events regularly to make the people more aware about diabetes. The expo will be open to visitors tomorrow as well.
