BKU’s dharna against land acquisition

Ludhiana, June 25
The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) today staged a protest demonstration against the forcible acquisition of land of farmers. The demonstrations were held throughout the state, particularly for the Trident group of industries.

BKU activists, led by district president Darshan Singh Kuli, gathered at the Mini Secretariat complex.

They urged the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to stand by his commitment of providing relief to the farmers from forcible acquisition of their land.

The BKU leaders said the Chief Minister had told them that he could not do anything on the issue since the farmers had lost the case in the court of law also. They said the Chief Minister could issue a notification and acquire the land from the industrialists whom the government had provided it and return it to the farmers by issuing a simple notification.

Business houses to run technical institutes: Dhindsa

The government had chalked out a plan for revamping the technical and industrial training education in the state. Big industrial houses were being roped in to run technical training institutes so that the trained workforce could be produced.

PWD minister P.S. Dhindsa said this while addressing a function after inaugurating the International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT) near the Bharat Chowk, here today.

The minister said about 25 centres of excellence were being established in ITIs at a cost of Rs 62.5 crore. At least 1,382 posts of instructors and teachers in the ITIs and polytechnics would shortly be filled.

The minister exhorted the youth to excel in their respective vocations. While appreciating the role of private institutions in imparting vocational education or training to students, he said they should incorporate latest techniques available to train youths.

CEO and IIFT founder Rattandeep Lal said that they were committed to satisfy the needs of students through development and implementation of quality management system.

Local IIFT director Sumit Chalia announced that the institute would encourage students to pursue technical studies and offer cent per cent placement guarantee to them.

Regarding the IIFT, Chalia said they had tied up with the University of LIMKO Wing, Malaysia and International Textile and Fashion Council (ITFC).The institute was ISO 9001-2000 certified.

“We have also tied up with international consultancies which will not only help in increasing the students’ point system but will help them to settle abroad”, he added.

More than 75 IIFT branches are imparting quality education and has organised 400 shows in India and abroad, he added.

City boy tops in VET-2007

Ludhiana, June 25
Anant Bir Singh Lubana has topped the Veterinary Entrance Test (VET-2007) for seeking admission to Bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry conducted by GADVASU on June 22, the results of which were declared yesterday.

Nearly 1,205 students from different parts of the state had appeared in the examination. Anant, student of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, has scored 93.6 per cent marks in the matriculation and 93.3 per cent marks in class XII examination conducted by the CBSE. His father, Prit Pal Singh Lubana is a professor at Punjab Agricultural University and mother is the head of the department of chemistry, Government College for Women here. He gives the credit of his success to his teachers and family members. — TNS

MET result declared

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, has declared the result of Management Entrance Test (MET) held on June 1, 2007 on behalf of the Punjab Government for MBA and MCA admissions to GND University, Punjabi University, Patiala and Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar.

With a purpose to guide the MBA and MCA aspirants for preparation of the entrance test, Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan campus, conducted a crash course of 15 days where in 94 students from all over Ludhiana and 20 students of GNIMT took coaching. The students who took training have achieved high ranks, according to an official press release of GNIMT.

Four of the trained students were able to secure positions among the first 109, another 12 managed to secure ranks between 100-500 while more than 20 students have ranks between 500-1500.

Col Singha, director, GNIMT, said classes were conducted by the faculty of GNIMT. Upinder Kaur and Nidhi Sharma conducted classes of mental ability while guidance for general ability was given by Mandeep Kaur and Rajan Sridhar taught general english.

Candidates were provided with necessary study material. A mock entrance test on MET pattern was also conducted for the candidates. All students had found the course satisfactory. Col Singha congratulated the candidates for their success and wished them luck for future.

GGNIVS students bag prestigious jobs

The students of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Vocational Studies (GGNIVS), an associate institute of GND University, Amritsar, and PTU, Jalandhar, have been placed in some of the most esteemed organisations of the country.

Majority of them have been placed while still pursuing their degrees.

Anshu Middha, a BCA student, has been selected as a technical support executive in IBM Daksh Business Process Services at Gurgaon. Rishi Soni, a student of MCA, has joined Wipro as a trainee in Bangalore. Says Soni, “I am thrilled to get an opportunity to work for such a big corporate and feel it will work wonders for my career graph. I attribute this achievement to the guidance of my teachers, hard work and blessings of my parents.”

A BSc-IT student, Monish Bharwal, has been placed in Syntel at Pune. Vaibhav, an MCA student, has joined Net Cradle at Ludhiana as graphic designer. Harjot Singh, an MBA student, is working as manager in Eveready Cycles Ludhiana. Robin John, a BSc IT, has joined CMCH here as a system operator.

Wishing all the students success in their career, GGNIVS director Kuldip Singh urged other students to follow their footsteps and and carve a niche for themselves.

Jatinder Kaur wins essay contest

Doraha, June 25
Various competitions as essay writing, paper reading and poem recitation were organised during the 10-day special camp being held on the college campus of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha. Volunteers participated in these competitions and tried their best to secure best positions. The topics for these were related to current social topics and evils staring in the face of the society.

Jatinder Kaur from B.A.II, Amandeep Kaur from B.A.II and Gurpreet Kaur from B.A.I won first, second and third positions, respectively, in essay writing as well as paper reading competitions. Pooja from B.Com.I, Jatinder Kaur from B.A.II and Paramjot from M.Com II won first, second and third positions in poem recitation.

Later on, students were divided into five groups and discussion was held on the same topics. Apart from this, volunteers were given instructions in jewellery making by Rakhjit Kaur. The volunteers had practical lessons in beads weaving, making of bridal sets, ears rings, bangles etc.
