The
aviation sector in the country is growing at a rapid rate of 25 per cent per annum, creating large-scale job opportunities. The aviation industry is facing a shortage of skilled staff at all levels — pilots, cabin crew, customer care personnel at the airports, including airport managers, and ground handling personnel. Increasing competition and further opening up of the skies has put the civil aviation sector on a sustained high-growth path with passenger traffic expanding by over 35 per cent. This scenario has forced the Civil Aviation Ministry and Director General of Civil Aviation to set up an aviation university at Hyderabad. This will be the first full-fledged aviation university in the country. The university would be a joint venture between the Airport Authority of India and the Andhra Pradesh Government. The courses would cover the navigation system, air traffic control, airport management, aviation law, security system etc. The government has set up a working group to work out details of the university, which will be set up on 700 acres at Hyderabad near the airport. Meanwhile, the working group is studying the courses being provided at reputed aviation institutions in the UK, USA, Singapore, and Sweden which will serve as model of the proposed university. This will help to provide trained manpower for the burgeoning aviation sector. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government has also decided to invest Rs 1 crore for setting up an institution to train the youth of the state to become pilots. The first phase of the courses will comprise modules to train the youth as cabin crew and customer care agents, ramp agents, air catering staff, and handyman. In the second phase, courses like pilot training and aircraft training will be introduced. All these courses will be self-financed, which means the entire cost of imparting training will be recovered from students and there will not be any subsidy. The institution will be able to accommodate only 100 students. The aviation sector will further create jobs because of the setting up second airport at Navi Mumbai. The air cargo hub at Nagpur, maintenance overhaul and repairs (MRO) station of boeing at Nagpur.
