Monsoon advances in region

New Delhi, June 26
Running almost on time, the southwest monsoon today further advanced into some more parts of east Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and northern parts of West Uttar Pradesh.

In fact, some extreme northern parts of Haryana and Punjab, including Amritsar, Ambala and Chandigarh, also came under the influence of the most-awaited weather phenomenon. The India Meteorological Department expects Delhi and some more parts of Punjab and Haryana to get covered before the week gets over.

As per IMD Director B.P. Yadav, the normal date of arrival of monsoon over extreme northern parts of Punjab and Haryana is June 26 and at present the northern limit of monsoon is passing through Deesa, Idar, Hoshangabad, Pendra, Ambikapur, Varanasi, Sultanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Ambala and Amritsar.

“Ambala recorded 2 cm, Chandigarh 8-9 cm, Jammu 4 cm and Amritsar light rains today. Next week will be a week of active rains and all parts of Central India and some more parts of the northwest will get covered,” Yadav said, adding that while there is year-to-year variation, normally the entire country gets covered by July 15.

Meanwhile, after raining havoc over Telangana, Rayalseema, Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa regions during the past few days, the monsoon is now shifting focus elsewhere. Yadav says that for now the worst is over for these regions, but as on date a low-pressure area has now formed over northwest Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast.

The current meteorological analysis and numerical weather prediction models suggest that the system is likely to concentrate into a depression over the same area by tomorrow. This depression will cross Orissa coast on June 29 and move in a west-northwesterly direction across Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Under its influence, enhanced rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls of more than 25 cm is likely over Orissa, north Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from tomorrow till June 30.

Subsequently, with the expected west-northwestwards movement of the system, the enhanced rainfall belt is likely to shift to Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, Gujarat and adjoining south Rajasthan during the next the two to three days.

And in association with the above system, southwest monsoon is likely to advance further into Central India and some more parts of plains of northwest India during next five days. And as far as the Capital is concerned, it will most probably be a drenched weekend, assures Yadav.
