Chandigarh, June 28
Chandigarh’s golf superstar Jeev Milkha Singh has teamed up with “golf in Dubai” as their brand ambassador to showcase the emirate’s attractions on a global stage.

The first Indian to break into the top-50 of World Rankings, following his superb performances around the globe last year, Jeev joins heavyweights like Ernie Els, Mark O’Meara, Colin Montgomerie, Henrik Stenson, Thomas Bjorn, Lee Westwood and the revered Peter Cowen in an illustrious list of giD ambassadors driving the brand “Dubai” forward.

The son of the legendary ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh, Jeev jumped to a career-high 37th rank in the world from a poor 376th in just one season when he claimed four titles, including the Volvo Masters at Valderrama at the tail-end of last year, to make up for six “frustrating” winless years.

At the Asian Tour award function held in Bangkok, he swept three prestigious awards, including the inaugural category for ‘Special Achievement’ for 2006 in addition to winning the ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ and the ‘Order of Merit’.

“Winning these awards is a reflection on Jeev’s dedication, fighting spirits and honesty in the sport,” said Mohamed Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of golf in Dubai.

“His contribution to Asian golf, no doubt, has been immense and he is also considered among the elite on the Japanese and European Tour,” he added.

“With golf in Dubai promoting and organising the Indian Masters from February 7 to 11 next year, his association with us will further spice up the first European Tour event ever to be held in India,” Buamaim added.

Jeev, currently ranked 57th in the world, is looking forward to having a long association with golf in Dubai.

“I have always considered Dubai as my second home. Whenever I have played in the Dubai Desert Classic the reception from the galleries has always been overwhelming. All I can say is a big thank you. I am privileged and honoured to be a global ambassador for golf in Dubai,” said Jeev.

Mohali, June 28
Local medium-pacer Amanpreet cornered glory by making it to the India under-19 squad to Sri Lanka for a tri-nation series starting July 19. Besides Sri Lanka, Bangladesh will be the third side.

This is not the first time that this promising bowler has made waves in the game. He has proved his mettle by becoming part of the under-19 team to England that tour last year. There, he got a chance to play one match against England.

Starting the game at the age of nine, 17-year-old Aman caught the attention of cricket aficionados while playing for Punjab.

Seeing his performance in the state camp at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium, PCA selectors gave him his first break by selecting him for the Inter-State (U-17) Cricket Tournament in 2004.

In his first season for the state, he snapped 26 wickets in just five matches.

In the tournament, the best performance was in a match against Haryana where Aman claimed nine wickets in two innings.

After this performance, the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore, opened its doors to the talented cricketer the same year.

Stepping ahead, he got selected to the Zonal Cricket Academy U-19 (ZCA) camp from where Aman was chosen for the ZCA north zone team.

To date, Aman has represented north zone team twice in Hemu Adhikari Trophy.

He again proved his mettle by snapping 22 wickets in six matches.

Aman got a shot in the arm when he made his debut in Ranji Trophy this year.

Expressing happiness over his selection, Aman termed the selection for the U-19 tour a big opportunity.

“I will try to live up to the expectations of my parents, coach Bharti Vij and my well-wishers. My coach has worked very hard to hone my skills especially in swing bowling.

I am trying to learn other aspects like reverse swing, a lethal weapon in today’s cricket, from my coach now,” said 6’3” tall cricketer, while thanking PCA officials for their support.

Equally overjoyed was coach Vij who said: “Aman has the potential to make it big as he has all qualities of a successful bowler.”
