Rahul for Nomura Cup trials
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, June 30
Rahul Bakshi is just 16, but this Chandigarh boy is one of two junior golfers to have been called for trials to select an Indian amateur open team for the Nomura Cup Amateur Golf Championship to be held in Taipei in October.

Just back after winning the Delhi Golf Club Open Junior Golf Championship, Rahul is all set for the trials in Delhi as also for the World Junior Golf Championships to be held in San Diego from July 15.

With amateurs like Gagandeep Bhullar turning professional golfers, the organisers have invited two juniors, Rahul and Chikka Rangappa, for the trials.

It was an easy victory for the Chandigarh junior golfer at the DGC course. He started well, sinking five birdies against three bogeys to tie with Bhawani Singh Rathore with a two-under score of 70 on the first day. The hot and humid conditions on the second day saw Rahul finish with a three-over card of 75.

But despite this poor show, he led on the second day, with Rathore returning a poor score of 80.

Intermittent showers on the third day led to suspension of play for brief spells twice. A three-over card of 75 was enough to take Rahul to a nine-stroke over Rashid Khan of Delhi. A two-over score of 74 saw Rahul clinch the title with a six-over score of 294.

One week earlier, Rahul clinched the Pro-am title at the Golden Greens in Gurgaon. He also finished second in the Southern Indian Junior Golf Championship at Coimbatore in the first week of June.

Rahul who cleared the matric examination from St John’s School with 84 per cent marks is these days working on his short game.

He is all set to concentrate on reading the lines while putting. And with Jesse Grewal at hand, Rahul is sure to master the putting. He has also been selected for the Oil India Golf Scholarship from August last. The sponsorships come only after the junior tag goes.

Rahul, who turns 17 on October 5, also took part in the Indian Open pro event last year.

“Although I missed the cut, the experience was wonderful,” said Rahul.

Trials for sports wing seats
Lukewarm response from boys, too
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 30
The situation on the second day of trials for sports wing seats for colleges affiliated with Panjab University was no different than yesterday’s, as only 218 boys showed up on the PU campus today.

Yesterday, only 210 girls appeared for the trials in all 15 disciplines. With the culmination of today’s trials, the final phase of selection trials for wing seats by the department has completed.

In the trials for boys, football drew the maximum number of sportspersons (50), followed by athletics (46) and kabaddi (34). Basketball and boxing saw 18 contenders each, hockey 17, handball 14 and volleyball 10. Disciplines like weightlifting (4), badminton, gymnastics, judo and wrestling (two each) disappointed the authorities with low turnout.

Like girls, not a single sportsperson turned up for trials in cycling and swimming from any college. In all 1986 sportspersons - 895 girls - came from colleges of PU, Chandigarh; Punjabi University, Patiala; and GND University, Amritsar, to get wing seats. The merit list will be decided on July 2.
