New Delhi, July 5
The poll to elect the successor for Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat will be held on August 10, the Election Commission announced here today.
The term of Shekhawat, who is contesting the presidential poll as an Independent backed by the NDA, ends on August 18.
The poll panel said that the notification for setting the poll process rolling would be issued on July 9. The last date for making nominations was July 23. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 26, the polling would be held on August 10, and
the results would be declared the same evening.
The vice-president is elected by an Electoral College comprising of members of both
Houses of Parliament, including the nominated members. The members cast their vote in ballot paper according to a
system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.
The electoral college that would elect the
next vice-president would comprise 790 members with 545 members from the Lok Sabha and 245 members from Rajya Sabha.
The commission said that those who file the nomination papers
must have at least 20 electors as proposers and 20 electors as seconders. An elector
can subscribe to only one nomination paper of a candidate as either a proposer or seconder.
The security deposit for the election is Rs 15,000, which has to be submitted along with the nomination paper.
