New Delhi, July 7
It was an unusual court proceeding today when the judge came out of the courtroom and went to an ambulance which had brought controversial RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav to hear his plea.
The situation arose as the parliamentarian, who sustained a fracture in his right leg while playing badminton in Tihar Jail recently, could not be lifted by the accompanying cops to the courtroom of additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Kamini Lau.
The law maker, who was seated on a wheel-chair in the ambulance, had sought exemption
from personal appearance in a case of false affidavit filed by him before the Delhi High Court in 1998 after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him in connection with the murder case of CPM leader Ajit Sarkar.
On being informed about his immobility, the ACMM went near the ambulance to conduct the proceedings and allowed his plea saying, "till Yadav recovers, the matter will be heard through video conferencing link".
The video conferencing link between Tihar jail and Patiala House was established recently.
The MP from Madhepura in Bihar was shifted from a jail in Patna to Tihar on the direction of the Supreme Court which had taken strong exception to the special treatment meted out to him.
The ACMM took strong note of the fact that the MP could not bring any witness in his support since January and asked him that no more opportunities would be given to him.
Yadav is being tried for allegedly submitting false affidavits in the Delhi High Court. Yadav, in the affidavits, had allegedly contended that he was a resident of Delhi.
