Decision in a day or two: Mulayam

Faizabad, July 7
Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav today said his party has decided not to support any of the candidates in the coming presidential election but a final decision would be taken in consultation with the constituents of the Third Front in a day or two.

Following consultations with Third Front leaders including TDP president Chandrababu Naidu, AIADMK chief Jayalalitha and leaders of other regional and Left parties, a decision would be taken in a few days time on voting in the presidential election, he told mediapersons here.

Terming the UPA presidential candidate Pratibha Patil as a "good lady", the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said though he respected her a lot, the country had wanted the renomination of outgoing president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for his intellectual genius.

Replying to a question on opposition to her being made a candidate as she was a woman, Yadav said it was "unfortunate" that Patil's nomination had invited controversies.

On Amitabh Bachchan's disputed land deal, Yadav refused to comment, saying that the matter was sub-judice.

About former party colleague Beni Prasad Verma's adverse remarks against him, Yadav said he had avoided any comments on the matter and would not issue any statement on the same.

Asked on the functioning of Mayawati-led government in the state, Yadav, who was here to attend a private function, said his party would chalk out a strategy after assessing its work for six months. — PTI
