Bhutto’s PPP stays away
Pak oppn leaders form grand alliance
Afzal Khan writes from Islamabad

Top opposition leaders, gathered in London on Wednesday, decided to form an All- Parties Democratic Alliance to launch a concerted campaign for restoration of democracy and ending military role in politics.

The summit meeting of 37 opposition parties who participated in the two-day All- Parties Conference (APC) hosted by former premier Nawaz Sharif in the city on July 7-8, also constituted an action panel to coordinate anti-Musharraf campaign and agreed on a schedule of public rallies starting from Quetta on August 9 and Liaquat Gardens in Rawalpindi on August 14 coinciding with the Independence Day, a report received from London said.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of former Premier Benazir Bhutto said it would not be a part of this alliance labelling the move as premature. Leader of PPP delegation Makhdoom Amin Faheem said the constitution of a new alliance was not listed on the APC agenda.

Fahim reaffirmed his party’s commitment to wage struggle for democracy and end the rule of the military. He said General Musharraf was unacceptable as President in uniform or without uniform.

Talking to a TV channel, Nawaz Sharif said the alliance would strive for ending Gen Musharraf's military dictatorship. Cricketing legend Imran Khan took a strong position in the summit meeting saying no party should be allowed to paralyse others from moving ahead with a united front against Musharraf.
