K.S. Chawla

Ludhiana, July 12
The review committee set up to consider the demand for separating various departments of Punjab Agricultural University has recommended demerger of eight such departments.

The committee, comprising deans and directors, was set up by vice-chancellor Manjit Singh Kang on the demand of faculty members of various departments, which were merged during former vice-chancellor K.S. Aulakh’s tenure. About 12 departments were merged during his term.

The review committee has recommended demerger of the food, science and agricultural engineering departments. The departments were formed after merging the department of agricultural processing of the college of agricultural engineering with the department of food science technology of the college of agriculture and the department of food and nutrition of home science college.

The merger of the departments had led to an agitation by students of the college of agricultural engineering and home science college.Dean of home science college M.K. Dhillon had sought voluntary retirement after this.

The committee asked the faculty of these departments to justify their demerger. The faculty of various departments submitted their representations to the committee.

The food industry centre, which was also attached with the merged department, will, however, continue to function with the college of agriculture, it is learnt.

The department of vegetables and floriculture and landscaping was also demarged. The committee has recommended that the department of floriculture and landscaping should be allowed to function independently. Further, the department of agronomy, agro-meteorology and forestry were merged with the department of agronomy.

The committee also discussed the demand of the faculty of the department of languages, journalism and culture where in the faculty has demanded that the masters in agricultural journalism should be revived.

Earlier, the department of languages, journalism and culture was working independently and was merged with the communication centre headed by an officer of the rank of additional director, communication centre. This department now runs a diploma course in journalism and mass communication, besides teaching languages to students.

The committee is understood to have recommended that the languages section should work under the dean, college of basic sciences and humanities. The committee also felt that the demand for the revival of masters degree in agricultural journalism should be reviewed in the context of the large-scale opening of the journalism courses in various universities and the scope for agricultural journalism.

The recommendations of the committee will be put before the academic council for the final decision on the demerger recommendations.

Farmers sore over irregular power supply
Shivani Bhakoo
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, July 12
Hundreds of farmers of Dehadhka and Dalla villages, near Jagraon, are sore over the irregular power supply to the two villages for the past many days.

The farmers complained that they were being harassed by the Electricity Board in the days when crops demanded regular irrigation. Other than rainy days, the regular power supply to the villages is less than eight hours.

The farmers said that they were facing problems because of overlaoded grid. They have regularly been complaining to the board officials but to no avail. Except for giving assurances, nothing has been done so far, alleged the farming community.

Mehar Singh, one of the elderly farmers, said they had already staged protest dharnas against the board's callous attitude at Rasoolpur grid and Roomi grid in recent days. "The officials never bothered to sort out the matter. We are in trouble as the problem still persists. We were happy as there were no power cuts initially but now they are not rectifying this small problem", he complained.

Another farmer Lachman Singh of Dalla village said this was nothing but the board's poor management. Their tall claims fall flat when there is need of regular power supply. The government makes announcements for regular power supply to farmers. They start imposing industrial power cuts so that farmers get uninterrupted power supply. "But they are harassing us by not rectifying the problem. If nothing is done at the earliest, we will involve other kisan unions to come to our rescue", said Lachman Singh.

The farmers said that their crop depended mainly on irrigation (power supply). "Though this is monsoon season but at times there is no rain for days. In that situation, we are dependent on electricity only. Economically, it is not viable to run tubewells on generators for hours", said Ajmer Singh, another agitated farmer.
