State scholarship for student
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 15
Equating copying with crutches being used by normal and healthy persons Palak Gupta, a state scholarship holder and student of the local Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, called upon students to give priority to studies so that they could shun use of unfair means during annual examination.

While addressing fellow students after receiving the state scholarship, Palak Gupta claimed that she could fare well in exams, as she not longed for use of unfair means. “We must understand that hard work and persistence had no substitute. Results of various schools in the past have proved that only laborious students achieved high targets and misguided ones who try to get through by using unfair means tasted defeat,” stressed Palak adding that it was right time to create awareness about adversities of copying and not during the commencement of exams.

Appreciating her stand Chokha Ram Kalra, an educationist, and director of the school, K.D. Sharma, urged teachers to stop misguiding students and encourage them to work hard.

Chamber’s plea to HC on Budda Nullah
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, July 15
The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings has urged the Punjab and Haryana High Court to review its order in the Budda Nullah case.

Inderjit Singh Pradhan, president of the outfit, said they would engage a senior advocate to pursue the matter. He was speaking after presiding over a meeting of its members today.

He said those present were of the view that the onus of polluting the nullah lay with the local Municipal Corporation.

He said there were about 864 units (387 electroplating / galvanizing units, 259 dyeing textiles manufacturing / washing units and 218 other units) registered with the Punjab Pollution Control Board and fell under the red category. Approximately, 13 per cent discharge of treated sullage and and effluents in the nullah was by the industry but the rest, 87 per cent of untreated discharge was by city inhabitants, treating which was the responsibility of the civic body, he pointed out.

The recommendations of the P. Ram Committee and the orders of the HC to stop even the discharge of treated water of red units and to keep on hold the expansions of the new and existing industry was not a prospective direction with regard to industrial growth of the state, he pointed out.

He also alleged that certain vested interests were working overtime to ensure the flight of industry from the state.

While throwing light on the gradual growth of the industry from l952 onwards, Pradhan informed that entrepreneurs set up their units after securing the permission from the departments concerned.

Moreover, all units were regularly paying water treatment charges to the board, he added.

However, he said this should not be construed that they were against the task of cleaning the nullah which was important from the sanitation and environment point of view. But it should be done in a manner which should not result in the closure of the units providing employment to the lakhs of workers.
