Opening new avenues responding to the needs of the newly emerging job market, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, has introduced several professional courses from the current academic session. Apart from M.Sc (Electronic Media), MBA (Service Management) and M.Pharma courses, the university has introduced PG diploma courses in Management of Developmental and Welfare Services, Fish Farm Technology, Forensic Sciences, Floriculture, Banking and
Finance. The Directorate of Distance Education of the university has introduced a new course to meet the requirements of the hotel and tourism industry. This three-year course is designated as MBA (Hospitality Management). The directorate has also received a letter of intent offering a two-year B.Ed course through the distance mode. It is making all out efforts to launch this course by the end of July or early August, 2007. The directorate also offers courses in various areas for the empowerment of the masses. One such course is Bachelor's Preparatory Programme, which provides an opportunity to those who could not pursue their school education up to the 10+2 level.
In a bid to enhance the credibility of its new-age programmes in engineering and technology in the national and international markets, the university has adopted the credit system of study. It has made provision for award of 'grades' in B.Tech (Instrumentation) and M.Tech (Process Control Instrumentation), being run in the Institute of Instrumentation
Engineering. The university has also drawn up a time-bound plan to give a required fillip to research work. Adopting austerity approach, research laboratories for the various science disciplines are being revamped and modernised by acquiring the needed equipment, informed the Vice-Chancellor, Dr R.P
Hooda. Besides, the university is assiduously engaged in formalising several crucial and strategic support service centres such as Centre for Science and Technology to cater to the research needs of the industry, Center for Corporate Research to meet the human resource requirements of the business world, Centre for Haryana Development Studies to guide and advise the State Government on development issues, Centre for Remote Sensing, Geographical and Geophysical Studies for disaster and water resources management, Centre for Dalit Amelioration Studies to devise appropriate policies and welfare schemes for this disadvantageously placed section of society, said Dr K.K Kathuria, Director, Public Relations, Kurukshetra

GURU Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology has been introducing courses in newer disciplines every year or so. This year, the university has introduced M.Tech and B.Tech courses in Food Engineering and B. Tech course in Packaging Technology. These courses have been introduced in view of the importance being given by the Centre to the food processing and packaging industry.
It proposes a powerful Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which will be the single window agency for setting rules and regulating the sector. Efforts are also underway to establish large numbers of food parks in the country to enable entrepreneurs to set up cluster of food industries.
The objective of programme is to train the best talents of the nation in order to provide a support base for the country's food security. The syllabus is framed to enable the students to comprehend the whole gamut of the fast-changing food scenario of the world. The programme is designed to expose the students to state-of-art laboratory facilities, created with the assistance from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and various other agencies. Hands-on training in commercial food processing industries, students' project work, exposure to national and international seminars and multi-disciplinary approach are the highlights of the courses.
The scope of packaging industry is ever expanding. However, the lack of trained manpower is one of the biggest concerns of the industry. The Department of Printing Technology of the university has come up with B.Tech (Packaging Technology) course to produce trained manpower for the industry. The students will get acquainted with the theoretically as well as practical aspects of packaging technology. Recently, the department has procured four-colour Web-Fed Offset printing machine, a four-colour Web-Fed Gravure Printing Machine, a Web-Fed Flexographic printing machine and a programmable Single-Knife Trimmer so that the students get maximum exposure to these machines before entering the industry. TILL recently, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) at Rohtak was popular among students for its traditional academic courses, especially those in life sciences, applied sciences, humanities and commerce
disciplines. However, in the past few years, an attempt has been made to transform the university's academics by introducing various technical, professional and job-oriented study
programmes. The latest courses introduced at the university include two-year M.Sc programmes in Medical Biotechnology and Food Processing Technology, which are offered by the Advanced Centre of Biotechnology recently set up on the MDU
campus. Then, the there are specialised MBA courses, including MBA (Business Economics) at the Department of Business Economics and MBA (International Business) offered by the university's Institute of Law and Management Studies, Gurgaon.
Last year, the Department of Mathematics launched a two-year M.Sc degree in Mathematics with Computer Science, which is among one of the sought-after
courses. Besides, master's-level programmes in hotel management and tourism management are also there. This year, the MDU authorities have started a certificate course in the Urdu language under the Department of Hindi. The university also runs certificate and diploma courses in the French and Spanish languages, while M.Phil in clinical psychology and some other new courses are on the
anvil. The B.Pharma, MCA and MBA courses of the university are attracting many students, as job prospects are bright in these programmes. Besides, the Directorate of Distance Education of MDU also runs various bachelor's as well as postgraduate courses in different streams. — Sunit Dhawan

WITH the new emerging trends in education and to meet the present-day requirements of the students of the region, Chaudhary Devi Lal University is planning to start two new courses, Bachelor of the Computer Application and Bachelor of the Business Administration, through its distance education
programme. Besides, with the increasing resources from its distance learning courses and the government aid, the university is planning to set up three new language departments, including Hindi, Punjab and Sanskrit. Last year, over 10,000 students had registered for the distance education courses. The university has been running 16 departments, which offer 21 career-oriented and specialised courses to the students. These courses are M.Tech. (Computer Science and Engineering, MCA, M.Sc in various subjects like biotechnology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, food science and technology, energy and environmental sciences, MBA, M.Com, B.Ed, MP.Ed, DP.Ed, CP.Ed, Master of Arts in English, economics, public administration, journalism and mass communication and
LLB. Dr J. N Sharma, Joint Director, Distance Education, said besides these courses, the university was also offering M.Phil courses in management, education, computer science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, biotechnology, microbiology, commerce, economics, English, journalism and mass communication, library and information science through distance education. — Kiran Deep

Campus Notes Guru Nanak Dev University has banned ragging on all its campuses as per the Supreme Court directions.
Prof Sarup Singh, Dean Students Welfare, has, through a circular, directed the students to strictly desist from ragging and said that strict action would be taken against the students found indulging in the illegal act. He said display of disorderly conduct, teasing, rude treatment, manhandling, any kind of psychological abuse, asking students to do any act which they would not have done in an ordinary course or which causes them embarrassment, etc., would be treated as ragging.
Prof Singh said punishment for the defaulters would include holding of results, debarring them from representing institutions in any national or international sports meet and festivals, suspension or expulsion from the hostel and rustication from the
institute.
Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak A three-day faculty-development programme (FDP) on "Pedagogy in Management" was organised by the Institute of Management Studies and Research (IMSAR) of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here recently.
Research orientation in management faculty, effective teaching techniques to develop entrepreneurial skills in students, use of case study method in teaching and essential skills for effective teaching were discussed during the
FDP. In a special address, Prof Ranbir Singh, Vice-Chancellor, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, focused on the key components of teaching. He gave effective tips on the art of teaching to the
participants. Prof G.S. Batra from Punjabi University, Patiala, threw light on the various aspects of management research. The Director, IMSAR and Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof A.K. Rajan, maintained that this FDP was merely a beginning. "IMSAR intends to organise a slew of FDPs, MDPs (Management Development Programmes) and EDPs (Executive Development Programmes) in future," he added.
