Motivating in time of change
Patricia Kitchen

Informing employees that they must change is one thing. Inspiring them to do so is quite another. Sure, you might say that the continuation of their paychecks is quite the motivation, and, in fact, it is. But plenty of people who are not truly won over have a knack for expressing willingness, while sabotaging in subtle ways.

Several suggest these resources for bosses looking to learn more about what it takes to inspire.

For starters, check out the films “Saving Private Ryan;” “Hotel Rwanda;” “12 O'clock High;” and “Henry V,” especially King Henry's St. Crispin's Day speech.

As for books, take a look at:

  •  “The Leadership Pipeline — How to Build the Leadership Powered Company,” by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter and James Noel.

  • “Authentic Leadership,” by Bill George.

  •  “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies,” by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras.

  •  “Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built A Company One Cup At A Time,” by Howard Schultz.

  •  “Why Should Anyone Be Led By You? What It Takes to Be an Authentic Leader,” Robert Goffee & Gareth Jones.

  •  “Primal Leadership,” Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee.
