Chandigarh, July 26
Come August and the Government Model Senior Secondary School-32 will don a new avatar. Despite being the first government school to run ‘online’, there is well-equipped science laboratory, IT Laboratory, Fashion Designing Laboratory, MLT laboratory, sports facilities and what not!

The latest addition is the new cricketing infrastructure being developed in the school with the help of Chandigarh Sports Club. Elaborating the project, Anil Sharma, the principal and nodal officer of cricket project, disclosed that a pact has been approved between the UT Education Department and the Chandigarh Sports Club.” The CSC is developing the whole project. The school has not spent a single penny on this project but manual labour only.”

The work will be completed in different phases. There will be two pitches - one would be turf pitch for special tournaments and another one would be clay pitch for general practice. Apart from this, there would be two practice nets - concrete and clay.

At present the work is being done on the pitches as per international pattern and the ‘bermuda’ grass is being grown on it on the lines of PCA pitch. “We have brought sand specially from Ludhiana to be laid on the pitches. Thereafter, we have plans to install electronics scoreboard, stands etc. Afterwards, the proposal is there to install even floodlights”

When asked, Sharma said the school tournament would always be given priority and the CSC has been given permission to use the pitch for a period of one year only that too on Sundays or on holidays, when the school is closed. After this time span, the CSC will not have any claim on the infrastructure.

Besides, this it would be the responsibility of the CSC to coach the children of the school in cricket and prepare school cricket team free of cost.

Another addition is its well stocked fully air-conditioned library which would now be opened for the senior citizens of the city. Confirming this, Anil Sharma, the principal of the school said, “Within five to six days we are going to introduce special evening timings (5 pm to 7 pm) for the senior citizens. We have brought special comfortable chairs for the library and generated funds from our own resources. It was our work experience fund which helped us to shape this library like this.”

Being online school, the school is planning to start assignment and solution system. “Under this plan, the parents would know about their children’s performance, their behaviour through our website. They would be given a code that would enable them to access information about their child only. A teachers forum has been formed for the purpose”.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
The Punjab & Chandigarh College Teachers' Union has reacted to the silence being observed by the Governing Body of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh and the Chandigarh administration towards the financial scams discovered in the college involving around 1 crore rupees.

The state vice-president of the PCCTU, Professor Anil Sarwal, in a written statement, has said the union had written a detailed letter to the Chandigarh Administration regarding the Rs 42 lakh scam discovered in SGGS College during the last session. They also demanded a thorough probe into the scam by the SES and Chandigarh Administration.

He said it has been over six months and no action taken report had been made public whereas another embezzlement involving Rs 31 lakh from the college funds was discovered and instead of taking any immediate action, it was kept under wraps.

He warned if the SES failed to take appropriate action against the culprits the union would be forced to resort to the path of agitation and seriously take up the matter with the Chandigarh Administration and other authorities concerned to unveil this huge conspiracy.

He also suggested to the SGGS College unit of the PCCTU not to become apathetic about the matter and assured them that the PCCTU would boldly stand by their every action taken in this regard.

He said because this is an aided college and 95 per cent financial aid is provided by the government, the Chandigarh Administration is its legal custodian and it is the moral responsibility of the Administration to ensure accountability.

Domestic violence discussed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
The fourth day of the workshop on ‘Gender Sensitisation’ at Government College, Sector 46 brought home the reality of violence in homes today. While the discussion focused on violence particularly against women, Harpreet Gill, lecturer in English from MCM DAV College said if violence were to be categorised, more than the acts themselves, it was the fear of violence that women carried inside them. “What is really terrible is that all these categories of violence, be it foeticide, infanticide, rape or domestic violence, are not acts of strangers. In most cases, they involve family members and happen within the home, a place considered to be safe and secure,” she said.

Taking the point further, resource person Jaya Shrivastava, activist and campaigner, explained that patriarchy is so deep seated in our society that most of the time we try and explain it in our deep-rooted beliefs. “Why do we say if women dress in a particular way they ask for unwanted attention? This is actually just a notion that unfortunately most people, including women believe.”

Representatives of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council and the Bar Association today met Chief Justice (CJ) Vijender Jain to discuss the issues concerning ongoing agitation of lawyers.

Navtej Singh Toor, Bar Council chairman, who was among those who met the CJ, said the CJ suggested a probe into the actual situation.

The CJ also suggested that a three-member committee of senior judges be constituted to look into the entire scenario and not just the Tahar Singh issue. He said after getting the report from the said committee, he would recommend whatever action needed to be taken.

Toor asserted that such committee was rarely constituted against a sitting judge and would have serious repercussions on many fronts.

Bar association president Anmol Rattan Sidhu, too, was among those who met the CJ.

To a query as to what would be the course of action of the Bar till such committee submitted its report, Toor said the resolution passed by the council would stand.

He said that a final meeting of the general house of the council would be held on July 29. The council had given a protest call for July 30 when the lawyers across the states of Punjab and Haryana would wear black badges.
