India needs public health experts: WHO official
Arun Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
India has good policies for improving the public health system in the country but fails to achieve the desired results as the implementation of policies is not uniform. This was stated by Dr Samlee Plianbangchang, regional director, World Health Organisation, South East Asia, here today.

Dr Samlee is here to inaugurate Masters of Public Health Course (MPH) at the PGI School of Public Health. He will also address directors of public health institutions of India who are participating in the second meeting of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Partnership for Schools of Public Health tomorrow.

India is a country of over one billion population but only one institute at Kolkata is imparting education in MPH, commented Dr Samlee. However, work in this field is gaining momentum as Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, family and health welfare minister, is keen to improve the situation.

In the developed countries, the medicos try to find the origin of diseases while here in India they do not get time from coping with the diseases, added Dr Samlee.

Commenting on the shortage of public health experts in the region, Dr Samlee said the first aim of the government should be to create faculty who could train the people. To improve the situation along with doctors and paramedic staff, public health experts were needed in the field to carry out research and other activities. India is producing hardly 400 experts in the public health every year while the requirement is more than 1,200, added the WHO official.

The availability of curriculum was another area which needed attention as majority of developing nations did not have a curriculum to teach the students, informed Dr Samlee.
