Pre-Subroto Football
New Public outclass St John’s

The team from New Public School, Sector 18 outclassed St John’s-26 team 2-0 in the Pre-Subroto Football Cup match for boys’ under-17 age category held at GMSSS-37 grounds, here today.

Right from the word go, NPS team made its presence felt on the field and played an attacking game. Nikhil Prashar sent the ball home in the 8th minute of the match.

The other goal was scored by Raman Deep in the 23rd minute through a penalty kick.

The final score stood at 2-0 in favour of NPS.

Meanwhile, in another u-17 fixture, GMSSS-37 got a walkover against the GMSSS-23 team.

In the u-14 age category, the team of Ryan International School, Sector-48, thrashed the St Kabir’s team 2-1.

Ryan team took the lead through their strikers, Divjot and Rupam, who scored during the 8th and 23rd minutes, respectively.

The St Kabir’s team reduced the margin through Arjit Shukla who scored in the 30th minute.

Pre-Nehru Hockey
DAV-8 cruise to 7-0 win

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, registered a convincing win against GMSSS-35 team by 7-0 in the today’s opening match of Pre-Nehru Hockey tournament for under-17 boys’ category at Sector 42 Hockey stadium, here, today.

DAVSSS-8 team established its dominance right from the beginning. It was Gurjinder who scored the first goal during the 2nd minute of the match. Before the GMSSS-35 team could get themselves organised, another field goal was scored by Rohit just four minutes later.

GMSSS-35 lost a couple of good chances at this stage. DAVSSS-8 played with tight man-to-man marking and denied space to the rival midfielders. During the 12th minute, DAVSSS-8 earned their first and only penalty corner. Gurpreet’s low flick made the score 3-0.

Six minutes later, Rohit raided the circle of GMSSS-35 and managed to dodge their defenders to get the scoreline to 4-0.

Maintaining the DAVSSS-8 team’s dominance, Mohit scored another field goal during the 22nd minute. Then Akshay scored twice, in the 29th minute and 36th minutes, to take the tally to 7-0 in favour of DAVSSS-8.

Carrom tourney from today

Chandigarh, July 27
The 17th edition of the Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament for Senior and Junior category is going to begin St. Stephen’s School- 45, here, tomorrow. In this tournament 172 players including 63 girls from the tricity are taking part in four different events.

During the inaugural ceremony, the Chandigarh Carrom Association will also honour Farheen, a student of St. Stephen’s, Togan, the First National Carrom Champion (sub-junior) from Chandigarh and the victorious girls’ team which won the team championship in the recently concluded 35th Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship held at Faridabad.

Panchkula cricket trials tomorrow

Panchkula, July 27
Panchkula District Cricket Association is going to conduct trials to select the under-15 age group Panchkula district cricket team, on July 29 at 2.30 pm at Shri Shri Cricket Academy, DC Model School, Sector 7, here.

The team will participate in the Haryana State Inter-District (u-15) Cricket Championship to be organised by the Haryana Cricket Association starting from August 11. The players born on or after September 1, 1992, will be eligible to participate in the trials.

Satluj Public score 185 as rain stops play

Satluj Public School team set a target of 185 runs before Delhi Public School, Pinjore, during a semi-final match of the Under-15 Monsoon Cup Invitational Cricket Tournament underway at Satluj Public School grounds in Sector 4, Panchkula. The match could not be finished as it started to rain. The remaining part of the match will be played tomorrow at 11 am. In today’s first semi-final, Satluj Public team won the toss and elected to bat first while batting they scored 184 runs for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 25 overs. The second semi-final will also be played tomorrow between Alpine Public School, Pinjore, and St Stephens School, Sector 45, Chandigarh, at 1.30 pm.

Brief scores: Satluj Public School, Pkl :184/6 in 25 overs (Ankush Dhariwal 35, Gaurav Singh 32, Sajit Nagrath 28, Gurprabhjot Singh 26, Chand Gandhi 22, Sourav 2/25 ,Gagan 2/30).

ODI in Chandigarh
Arrangements for Ind-Aus match discussed

An Organising Committee meeting of administrative officials was held at UT Secretariat here today to make preparations for the one-day international cricket match between India and Australia, which is to be played in the city on October 8.

The meeting was presided over by UT Administrator Gen. S.F. Rodrigues (retd).

The meeting was attended by secretary general, Haryana Cricket Association, Ranbir Singh Mahindra, and senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration including adviser to the administrator, Lalit Sharma. The details of upgrading the infrastructure of the cricket stadium in Sector 16, which is to host the match, were discussed during the meeting.

Beside the Organising Committee, a Steering Committee under the chairmanship of adviser to administrator has also been set up to oversee the functioning of different committees set up for different functions. These committees included Infrastructure Committee, Traffic Control Committee, Technical Committee, Finance Committee, Media Committee, Medical Committee and Protocol and Hospitality Committee.

Gen Rodrigues also asked the organising committee to create a roadmap and benchmarks for all areas. He said that all committees must meet regularly to monitor the progress of work assigned to them and effectively coordinate with each other to ensure foolproof arrangements for the event.

Gen Rodrigues said the administration has already started the process for setting up a world-class coaching academy for cricket here and has tied-up with Australia for this.

He said that with a view to preparing a world-class girls’ hockey team in Chandigarh in the next two years, necessary steps have been initiated by identifying talent in the city’s educational institutions.

He also said the National Hockey Federation had also been approached to help in creating training facilities for youngsters in the city.
