College teachers to stage dharna on August 1

In order to draw the attention of the government towards their long pending demands, PCCTU members of non-government affiliated colleges of Ludhiana district will stage dharnas and hold rallies in their respective colleges on August 1 after the first two periods of teaching. This was disclosed in a press statement by area secretary of Ludhiana District Council of PCCTU, Dr Manjit Singh Komal along with other leaders of the union here today.

The PCCTU leaders alleged that in some of the colleges in the state, teachers had not been paid salary since January 2007.

Komal said the teachers serving in rural colleges were not being paid house rent allowance and pensionary benefits to retirees were also being denied.

Komal said Ludhiana district had maximum number of non-government colleges.

The leaders appealed to the MLAs of the state’s ruling combine to use their influence on the government in getting the genuine demands of teachers accepted.

VC welcomes freshers

Vice-chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) V.K. Taneja while addressing the freshers had stated that the education was key to success. The new generation would have to opt for specialised subjects to meet challenges. In future human resource would have to be more confident, skilled and equipped to address the ever increasing problems. He observed that the awareness of international agriculture and livestock, WTO, trade related intellectual property rights (TRIPS), global convention on climate and biodiversity should constitute integral part of our curriculum, he added. — TNS

Roof collapse: Builder gets bail

Ludhiana, July 29
The Shimla Puri police late last evening arrested and released on bail a builder, Manoj Jaggi, in the roof collapse incident at Farm Enclave on Thursday.

He was booked under Section 304-A of the IPC for allegedly causing two deaths due to negligence in construction. Two persons, including the owner of the under construction farm house, Tejinder Singh Chawla and his friend and vastu shastra expert, Ravi ‘Pandit’, were crushed under the roof. The case has been registered on the complaint of Inderpal Singh Chawla.

Meanwhile, the Ludhiana Architects’ Association has warned city residents to employ only qualified architects for construction and designing work for their buildings so that such tragic incidents can be avoided.

A press release of the association while expressing grief and sorrow at the unfortunate incident said it had been warning the cross section of society about the illegal activity of the fake architects.

The release said the person involved in the incident is neither an architect nor a member of Ludhiana Architects’ Association.

The association appealed to the residents that before engaging an architect, they should verify his true qualifications.

Ballet leaves audience spellbound

A ballet, “Sawayen Chet” (self-realisation, was staged by children of the Shobhaniya Kala Kendra, an institution for the promotion and dissemination of Indian Classical dance and music, during its annual cultural feast at Guru Nanak Bhavan last evening.

The performances of children left the audience bedazzled. The ballet was conceptualised and choreographed by Purva Koser Puri.

It emphasised the importance of time in different stages of life of a man. Set to a contemporary theme, it depicted eight stages of man’s life i.e. newborn, toddler, child, eight-years old, teenager, youth, middle-aged man and aged.

The accompaniments came from Sanjeev Sharma and Jaidev (tabla), Raj Kumar (dholak and labia), Manjeet, Sanjeev, Namrata, Anita, Daswin and Renu (chorus), Vanita (sitar), Nepali (shehnai and flute) and Monu (electric drum).

The music was directed by Sanieev Sharma.

BJP leader Rajinder Bhandani was the chief guest at the show. He honoured artistes and lauded the efforts of the kendra in enriching the cultural heritage of the state.
