Health awareness on your doorstep

Chandigarh, July 31
Chandigarh is all set to become the first city in this part of the region to use the commonest, and still the most effective, mode of transportation for driving home the message of healthcare.

The Administration has, in fact, decided to lay considerable load of conveying the significance of its schemes and activities on rickshaws and auto-rickshaws.

"Riding high after the success of its earlier initiatives aimed at complete immunisation and generation of awareness about health concerns among the masses, the administration has resolved to glue stickers on rickshaws and auto-rickshaws to deliver the messages at your doorstep," the sources in the Administration asserts.

"It's one time investment," says Medical Officer with the Administration's Family Welfare Bureau, Dr Sangeeta Ajay Kumar. "Once you glue the stickers on the vehicles, the message travels at a steady pace. You see, the labels stay there on the vehicles for months together and carry information wherever they go".

Otherwise also, the reach is more. As these vehicles frequent areas where even the vernacular newspapers do not reach including slums and colonies in and around the city, the efficacy is more, undoubtedly.

This is not all. Unlike ads in the print and electronic media, you do not have to invest precious funds in making all those announcements again and again. You pay reasonable amount for the stickers, glue them on the vehicles well within the eye's range, and forget all about sweating it out to spread the message. Even sending electronic mails to your pals is not all that simple.

To begin with, the Bureau has ordered the printing of nothing less than 5,000 stickers in phase one of the operations. Gradually, all 10,000 rickshaws and autos patrolling the length and breath of the city round the clock will be covered. The entire exercise is being carried under the National Rural Health Mission.

Giving details of information printed in easily-understood Hindi on the labels, the sources say focus is on issues like breast feeding, along with better maternal and child health. Awareness on pre-natal determination test will follow soon.

This is just one of the initiatives undertaken by the Bureau in the recent past to spread the "good-health" word. It gave Chandigarh the unique distinction of being one of the few cities in the country to distribute pamphlets in Urdu.

The Administration has also made the submission of immunization certificate compulsory for kids seeking admission to the schools, thereby shifting the onus of the programme's success from the government to the parents. "Now, you will agree that the administration is injecting the right dosage of intelligence in to the system for curing the problems ailing it," Dr Kumar concludes.

GMSSS-37 thrash St Stephen’s
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 31
GMSSS-37 scripted a convincing win against St Stephen’s-45 5-1 in the pre-Subroto Football Cup match for u-17 boys held at the GMSSS-37 grounds, here, today.

Right from the word go, GMSSS made its presence felt on the field and played an attacking game. They controlled the game right from the beginning. They opened their account through their striker Pankaj Negi, who found no hitch in sending the ball home during the 13th and 18th minutes of the match.

With neat man-to-man marking, GMSSS played a tactical game to completely outwit the otherwise well-equipped Stephen’s team, who could not find their wonted form throughout the match.

During the 27th minute, it was Shenaj, who managed to score another field goal. Two minutes later, Sumit Passi with his fine distribution sense and dodging skills scored another goal, making the score 4-0.

Bouncing back with aggressive and strategic approach, the Stephen’s band reduced the margin during the 34th minute through Saket Singh. But, it was the only respite for them. Sumit Passi of GMSSS once again proved tough for the Stephen defenders, who, upon getting the possession of the ball, slammed it into the net for the final verdict of the match in his team’s favour.
