Steps taken to promote hockey in schools

The Punjab School Education Board is committed to promote sports among school students and for this purpose sports wings have been formed at different schools in the state. The board has been spending considerable amount in providing facilities to the players.

These observations were made by Kulraj Kaur Randhawa, deputy director, Sports, Punjab School Education Board, while interacting with mediapersons during her visit to meet trainees of Mata Sahib Kaur Hockey Academy at Jarkhar village, near here, today.

Randhawa expressed concern over fielding of overage players in majority of the events. She cautioned the organisers against fielding such players which cause great harm to the genuine and deserving players. She announced that the school board would form committees with district education officers, DPEs and PTEs as its members to check this menace.

Randhawa said a hockey league for sports wings of the education board would be organised at Jarkhar later this month.

She was felicitated by the organisers of the hockey academy on this occasion.

Kuldeep Singh, state organising secretary of the board, along with Rupinder Singh Ravi, assistant education officer, Ludhiana, Gurwinder Singh Kila Raipur, Lakhbir Singh Grewal, Amarjit Singh and Zora Singh Duail of the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club were present there.

Sports festival at Bilga from August 3

Hockey and kabaddi will be the main features of the inaugural edition of the sports festival, dedicated to the memory of Bibi Kartar Kaur, to be organised by the Gram Panchayat and Naujwan Sabha at Bilga village, near here, from August 3 to 5.

Giving this information, Navdeep Singh Lally, chief organiser of the event, said competition in hockey (academies u-19), kabaddi ( 37 kg, 47 kg and 52 kg), kabaddi (one village) besides football ( boys u-14), volleyball and shooting would be conducted.

Major hockey outfits of the area, including Sangrur academy, Kuthala academy, Roomi XI, Mata Sahib Kaur Academy of Jarkhar, Kila Raipur academy, Bahadurgarh Academy, Doraha academy and Rampur academy will be seen in action in this festival.
