Golf range for Mohali on anvil
Mohali, August 3 The range will be constructed by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and later maintained and run by a committee headed by the chief secretary of Punjab. Sources said the range would include a clubhouse and also a separate facility for indoor games. The proposal to have a golf range here was mooted almost two years ago. It was planned that the unutilised land in Phase XI would be given to the Punjab Golf Association, which will run the range and maintain it. However, the plan was changed and it was decided that Mohali should follow the management pattern being followed at the golf ranges and courses in Delhi, Gurgaon and Panchkula where a committee, that has members only in their ex-officio capacity, holds the reins. “Instead of allowing a group of persons to use the facility and run the whole show, control of the range remains with the government so that any revenue generated by the facility can be diverted for development works,” said a source. Other than senior bureaucrats, who will hold different posts in the committee on account of their position, the committee will also have certain executive members drawn from among golf players. The GMADA has constituted an in-house committee to work out the modalities of the project. The committee has asked for expression of interest from consultants, who will plan the range and design it for the GMADA. The land, opposite the Mohali Club in Phase XI, has been lying vacant for years now. “The land can be used commercially, but the township needs breathing space. Moreover, there is a great need for a golf course in SAS Nagar, ” added the source. Other than a clubhouse and restaurant, the range will have a conference hall, yoga room, library, gymnasium. |

Tennis centre getting final touches
Chandigarh, August 3 With the work having begun, the centre is likely to get functional very soon. “It will take one week to complete the remaining work. We are waiting for the monsoon to get over as the rolling cannot be done during the rains,” said J.P.S. Sidhu, joint director, Chandigarh sports department. Everything else is in place at the centre, which houses four clay courts, added Sidhu. The project, which began in 2004, has been hanging in the balance for one or the other reasons. Earlier, the work of laying the courts was halted when officials of the engineering department said the sports department had not sought sanction for heavy compacting from the administration. “In the estimate given to the engineering department, the cost of heavy rolling was not stated and the sports department began work on the project without checking the error. The engineering department objected to it and refused to bear the expenditure,” said an official. The centre will cater to players mainly from the southern sectors. |
