Mealy bug has no adverse effect on trees, say experts
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 6
Confirming the attack of the mealy bug on trees of different varieties, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) scientists have said so far no adverse effect of the bug had been noticed.

Mealy bugs, which have struck the cotton crop in the state, are polyphagous pests known to appear on large number of crops, weeds, perennial plants and ornamentals and cause damage by sucking sap from young plant parts.

N.S. Buttar, head, department of entomology, said mealy bugs had been found feeding on neem, pipal, shisham, fruit trees and other varieties but none of these trees had exhibited any adverse effect of their occurrence so far.

“Besides, species of mealy bugs are also known to thrive on citrus, grapes, guava, pomegranate, sapota and aonla but economic damage has not been recorded,” he added. There are many species of mealy bugs found on different hosts having different biology and ecology.

The PAU has observed the attack of mealy bugs on mango and cotton and specific strategy for its management has been recommended. For its management, Buttar said it was desirable to follow the cultural measures involving the removal and destruction of weed hosts besides the necessary use of insecticides.

On spotting the mealy bug on the aerial parts of the ornamental or on the perennial plants, it is worthwhile to treat the affected plants with any of the insecticides such as profenophos, accephate, thiodicarb, chlorphyriphos and quinalphos.

PCCTU not happy with govt policies
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 6
The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) is not satisfied with the state government’s attitude towards the non-govenment affiliated colleges in the state. These colleges were reeling under severe financial crisis as a result of which employees had not been paid salary for the past four to five months in numerous colleges. The union has strongly decried the allocation of Rs 60.28 crore for 2007 as against Rs 255 crore demanded by the DPI (colleges) under 95 per cent salary grant scheme.

Huge reduction in 95 per cent grant and total silence on the implementation of the pension and gratuity law clearly showed the betrayal of SAD-BJP manifesto. Salary grant scheme saw reduction in 95 per cent scheme and total silence on the implementation of pension and gratuity. The teachers have not been paid 50 per cent DA merger arrears for April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2006, as the earlier budgeted amount of Rs 16.56 crore had lapsed. Similarly out of Rs 8.26 crore for 2006 to 2007 only Rs 2 crore was released. The teachers had also been denied arrears of enhanced HRA, CPF and other allowances and teachers working in rural colleges had not been granted HRA despite decisions in this regard.

Talking to the media S.S. Hundal, President, Anil Sarwel, vice-president, Iqbal Singh Sandhu, finance secretary, M.S. Komal, secretary, and a large number of the executive committee members forcefully justified the ongoing PCCTU struggle due to the betrayal of the Badal government. All college teachers in Punjab and Chandigarh would cease work after two periods and stage dharnas in front of the principal’s office tomorrow.

Union leaders criticised the indifferent attitude of the Education Minister who failed to hold even one meeting with it to understand and resolve the problem.

While urging the Chief Minister and senior minister Kalia to fulfil their commitments forthwith, the union leaders declared that the agitation would continue and culminate in jail bharo andolan if the government failed to resolve the problem.
