Chandigarh, August 7
Four local hockey players - Dharamvir Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Deepak Kumar - have been selected in the probables’ list of a coaching camp for the junior hockey team.

The four players are from the Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42.

The coaching camp, which will be held at Nehru Stadium, Gurgaon, from August 10 to August 30, is in preparation for the Singapore International Hockey Challenge tournament. The international tournament is scheduled to be held at Singapore from October 17 to 21.

Last year, the team bagged a silver medal in the same tournament held at Singapore.

Elated over their inclusion, these hockey sensations said, “We will leave no stone unturned in securing our place in the final team. Our aim is to make the city proud. We will surely come out with flying colours,” they said.

Dharamvir was part of last year’s team also. He plays on the right wing and has great speed and great distribution sense. He stole the show during the annual Bombay Hockey Gold Cup Tournament held at Mumbai in April, where he bagged the ‘Best player of the tournament’ tag.

Deepak also made his presence felt during the 2005-06 u-17 National Hockey Tournament held here, where he scored mammoth 18 goals.

Deepak also scored seven goals and helped his team bag the second place at the u-15 Nehru Cup tournament held in Delhi.

The young lad is, however, not keeping well and will join his mates only after taking his doctor’s advice.

“We have learnt a lot under coach Jasbir Bajwa’s guidance. Our confidence level has risen and we have become mentally tough,” Harmanpreet and Deepak said.

“Speed is my biggest asset. I concentrate on netting the ball first, without giving much time to the opposite side to take position,” said Dharamvir.

Talking to this correspondent, coach Jasbir Singh Bajwa said, “These four players have been under my training at the academy. They are consistent performers and have the calibre of world-class players.”
