NHRC seeks report on poison deaths in jails

New Delhi, August 8
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Punjab government to submit within a month a factual report on the death of jail inmates due to insecticide poisoning.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a recent report in The Tribune, the Commission has sent a notice to the Inspector General (Prisons) and State Chief Secretary.

According to the report, more than 40 deaths have taken place in jails in Punjab due to insecticide poisoning. The report further said the authorities were unable to explain as to how the insecticides reached the jail premises and how the inmates consumed them. The NHRC has observed that the death of inmates due to poisoning constitutes a serious violation of human rights of the victims.
