Symposium on metabolic disorders today
Chandigarh, August 10 Around 25,000 children with metabolic disorders and 15,000 with congenital hypothyroidism are born every year in India. Common disorders include phenylketonuria, maple syrup urine disease, congenital hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis. Early diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis can reduce the burden of the disease and the infant and childhood mortality. There is a need for starting screening of newborns and even population screening for some of the commoner metabolic disorders. An improvement in knowledge and hence detection and management will be an important step in control of various metabolic disorders. |

Book for AIDS patient released
Chandigarh, August 10 The book intends to ensure there is enough research and background material to fall back on to help people suffering from HIV/AIDS to live a life
of dignity. Speaking on the occasion, the guest of honour, Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court, Virender Jain said this was a matter of right to life and health which was there for every citizen of this country. The Chief Justice released the book. The keynote address, written by the book’s editor, Laya Medhini, was read out by Manmohan Sharma

PGI doc conducts workshop
in Nepal
Chandigarh, August 10 Dr Ramesh K. Sen, additional professor, department of orthopaedic surgery, PGI, Chandigarh, was the course director at the workshop. The other faculty members at the workshop, which began on August 5, were professor Parvej Anjum from Pakistan and professor Wakaikul from Thailand. Forty orthopaedic surgeons from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal were imparted surgical skill. Dr Sen also performed two live surgical demonstrations. Dr Sen, who learnt the skills of this surgery in Germany, is also the secretary of the Association of Pelvi-Acetabular Surgeons of India. Dr Sen earlier conducted a similar workshop in Kuala Lumpur as well.

Treat obesity as a disease: Doctor
Chandigarh, August 10 This was stated by Dr Navin C. Raina, laparoscopic surgeon at Fortis Hospital. He was speaking on the launch of The Association for Study of Obesity (ASO), an NGO, here on Wednesday. Dr Raina, who is a coordinator of the NGO, said obesity should be treated as a disease and should be cured at an early stage. Dr Raina said there were more than 1 billion overweight adults and 300 million clinically obese persons in the world. Obesity culminates in conditions that eventually lead to life-threatening diseases, said Dr Raina. Dr Raina said the association was launched by persons who were concerned about the growing problem of obesity. Punjab advocate-general H.S. Mattewal, who was chief guest on the occasion, announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the association on behalf of the Chief Minister. PU vice-chancellor Dr R.C. Sobti also addressed the gathering. |
Uday scripts St Kabir’s victory
Chandigarh, August 10 Displaying his dribbling and scoring skills, Uday fashioned St Kabir's 2-0 triumph over St Xavier's,
Panchkula, in the u-11 category. He scored his first goal in the fifth minute and completed his brace in the 12th minute.
Uday of St Kabir was adjudged the best player of the tournament and Charanpreet of St Xavier's was declared the best goalkeeper. Teams: St

With better coordination, DAVP-15 opened their account in the eighth minute through Karanvir Singh while Anil Bhandari put the issue beyond doubt by netting the second goal. Karanvir of DAVP was adjudged the best player in the u-19 category. Inderjit of St Xavier's-44 was declared the best goalkeeper in the tournament. Teams: DAVPS-15:

Manav Mangal paddlers corner glory
Panchkula, August 10 In boys’ team championship, Manav Mangal and Bhavan Vidyalaya won their respective matches in the league. Manav Mangal School players beat DAV-8 and CL DAV, Panchkula, by 3-0 margin while Bhavan Vidyalaya overpowered DAV Sector-8, Panchkula, by 3-2 and CL DAV School by 3-0. A special category was introduced for the first time wherein players from Saket Handicap Institution vied for top honours in this event. Ranveer emerged winner while Rahul was runner-up in this category, which had the whole hall applauding for their hard work. Anu Saini of Manav Mangal School was the pick of the players in the cadet girls’ u-12 category. She defeated Samridhi of Gurukul with her efficient placement and shots all over the table. Kochhar, Egan set up final date
Chandigarh, August 10 While Kochhar and Arvind Bajaj defeated G.S. Bakshi and Rima Dhillon in the semi-final clash of Group A, Egan and Anish Gupta got the better of K.S. Brar and Col S.S. Boparai in Group B. Both Kochhar and Egan have entered the finals three times. While Egan has won the title twice, Kochhar has been triumphant once. The final will be played on August 14. The pairings for the tournament are made on the basis of some handicap. Each team consists of one member having a handicap of nine and below and the other having a handicap of 10 and above. The matches are conducted on a doubles match-play knock-out format with 3/4ths handicap, where the maximum handicap allowed is 18 for men and 24 for ladies. |

Chanchal is CWHA president
Chandigarh, August 10 She will replace K. Atma Ram, who stepped down due to poor health and age. Chanchal was authorised to nominate her team. She is expected to announce the other office-bearers in the next few days. Outgoing secretary Dr J.P.S. Sidhu proposed Chanchal’s name. Before the meeting, Dr Sidhu tendered his resignation to K. Atma Ram. Apprising the members of the activities of the Chandigarh Women Hockey Association, Dr Sidhu said, "The CWHA has made all possible efforts for the development of women hockey in Chandigarh and about 12 CWHA players have donned Indian colour for various international competitions. Around 30 players have attended the Indian camp for Chandigarh." The CWHA has organised the senior nationals, Indo-Kazakhstan test matches and nationals games successfully under the guidance of K. UT seeks info about officials in corruption cases
Chandigarh, August 10 The information was sought after a Public interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an inquiry into this practice was filed. A senior official said the details would be submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in form of an affidavit on the next date of hearing
of the case. On July 18, the High Court had issued the notice to the UT advisor for October 13. |
