HC orders repoll only in one booth
Ludhiana, August 11 Following the High Court order, the deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer, Sumer Singh Gurjar, said repoll would be held only in one booth where the EVM had developed snag and the result could not be retrieved. However, the deputy commissioner said the votes would be counted and the result declared only after the receipt of the High Court order in the civil writ petition. Earlier, the state election commission had declared the repoll of all booths in Ward No. 46 under Section 59 (2) (a) of the Punjab State Election Commission Act, 1994. SAD candidate Surjit Kaur and her husband Amarjit Singh Bhatia, senior Akali leader, were unhappy with the commission’s orders. Bhatia had been arguing that since only one EVM had developed snag, repolling should be ordered only in that booth and not the entire ward. He had met the Chief Minister against the commission's order but nothing could be done. Finally, he moved the High Court. Counting of votes in other booths of Ward No. 46 had showed that Surjit Kaur had polled 2,833 votes from all booths except booth No. 9. Trailing her was Gursharan Kaur, who had secured 2,320 votes. Both candidates had a margin of 513 votes. According to the deputy commissioner, there were 535 votes in the defective machine which was more than the difference between the two leading candidates. Hence, a need for the repoll arose. The matter was reported to the commission. Bhatia and his son, a former councillor, besides a few others, have been booked for “rioting”. A case has been registered against them for clashing with Surjit Singh, president, Danga Peerat welfare association. Bhatia has been alleging that all this was being done at the behest of some Akali leaders. |

Complaints pour in
Tribune News Service
Ludhiana, August 11 Since the elections were conducted by the state election department which is under the direct control of the state government, they did not expect any relief or justice, they said. It is not only Congress candidates alone who have been complaining, but also Independents. They alleged that wherever the alliance apprehended defeat, they started “manipulating” the system. Harjinder Lali, an Independent from Ward No. 6, said the election authorities shifted booth number one to Ward No. 8 at the last minute. He came to know about it only at the time of the polling. When his supporters went there, they were told that the booth had been shifted a month ago and it had been duly notified. Lali said he had the record and the list of booth of the ward provided by the election authorities but nobody was prepared to entertain his complaint. In the same ward, there was practically no polling till 4 pm in booth no. 9 and 9-A as polling officers told voters that they did not have the list with them to tally their identity cards. Lali alleged that it was a ploy to prevent the voters from casting their votes. The returning officer of the ward said the booth had been shifted about a month ago and she could do nothing about it. Similar reports came from other wards. In Ward No. 48, Congress candidate Surinderpal Singh Bindra alleged that outsiders had been made to camp in front of the polling booths to create “scare” among voters. Bindra was pitted against Manvinderpal Singh Makkar, son of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar. He said people had been “imported” from various places to ensure that the SGPC president’s son did not lose. The two candidates said although they tried to bring it to the notice of the authorities, nothing had been done. “We did not expect anything either as the officials had already been briefed that the alliance had to emerge victorious and they used all means to ensure that,” alleged Amarjit Singh Tikka, a Congress leader. |

Bant Singh, a resident of Kanganwal village, now settled in Canada, has accused the local police of allegedly shielding accused booked under a criminal case registered on July 13. The case was registered under directions of the Sangrur DC, who had received the complaint at a sangat darshan held at Sangrur about a month ago. Wake up, MC
Leisure Valley, the project of the local municipal corporation, has come of age. Lush green lawns, ornamental trees, flowers and the beautiful landscaping illuminated by colourful lights, have made it a popular picnic spot. The pleasure of morning and evening walks amidst lush greenery is, however, dampened by a pungent stench emanating from garbage thrown along the canal side and railway line. Apart from dumping garbage, the place is also used to answer the nature’s call by labourers. At times it gets impossible to sit in the valley. Though the walkers have complained about this problem a number of times, nothing substantial has been done so far. Only if the MC wakes up and do the needful. Baldev Kumar Baweja Ludhiana Readers are invited to mail letters (not more than 200 words) at "ludhiana@tribunemail.com" or post the same to The Tribune, 1, 2 Improvement Trust Building, Badaur House, Clock Tower, Ludhiana. |
