Havan marks beginning of academic session

Faculty and students of Swami Ganga Giri Janta Girls College, Raikot, sought blessings of Hindu deities and goddesses so that there are no impediments in their academic session on Sunday. A community havan was performed which, was attended by parents of the students besides staff and management committee. Isher Singh, regional manager, PNB was the chief guest and Rajesh Sharma, president, Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, the guest of honour applauded staff of the college for inculcating good habits among students.

Teej celebrated

Teej celebrations were held at Love Dale School, Ludhiana, on Sunday. Club members wore traditional punjabi dresses. Children celebrated the month of monsoon by dancing on numbers barson re megha, sawan main lag gayi aag, celebrating the flavour of the month. Girls had applied mehndi on hands. Monsoon treats like kheer, malpurre and hot pakoras were served to one and all.

Investiture ceremony

The investiture ceremony was held at BCM School, Dugri here on Saturday. Kashish Arora, Nidhi Sharma, Uday Rana, Harleen Kaur, Harjot Singh, Prabhpreet kaur, Nishant, Navdeep Sidhu were chosen as the House Captains of Kohinoor, Shalimar, Gulmohar, Pukhraj Houses respectively. Dinesh Kumar Sharma, house in-charge, along with the house captains and perfects received the trophy.

The function was presided over by Harjit Singh Gill, executive engineer of Punjab State Electricity Board.

Mehndi contests mark teej

Hundreds of girls from various educational institutes exhibited their talent for preservation of elements of folk culture at teej functions organised at their respective schools and colleges on Saturday. The organisers felicitated outstanding performers.

Kamal Preet, Priyanka, Kirandeep Kaur, Tawanpreet Kaur, Taranpreet Kaur, Charu Singla and Anu Mishra of Maharani Jhansi House and Mata Gujri House of local Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School were facilitated for their distinguished display of art of applying mehndi in junior and senior wings.

Kamla Sharma, director of the school, said mehndi application besides reviving cultural heritage served as medication for certain ailments.

The festival was also celebrated at Swami Ganga Giri Girls College, Raikot, also. Harjeet Kaur presided over the function while Balbir Kaur Talwandi was the chief guest.

Various types of swings, spinning wheels, Punjabi kitchen ware marked the occasion that depicted cultural heritage in its true tinge. According to Dr Savita Uppal, principal, Jaspreet Kaur was declared Miss Teej. Mandeep Kaur (Giddhian Dee Rani), Pooja Verma (Teej Koel), Jagdeep Kaur (Teej muskan) Ramandeep Kaur (Teej courage) and Rajdeep Kaur (Nakhrili Punjaban) were felicitated for their outstanding performance.

The teej function was celebrated at Kennedy High School, DAV High School and Janta College for Women.
