Ludhiana, August 15
I-Day celebrations were held in different schools in the city with almost every school coming up with a novel way of celebrating it.

Green Land School: A choreography, depicting the achievements of women during the 60 years of Independence was staged. The tiny tots of the school danced to the tune of "Chak De India" The celebrations came to an end with the pledge by the students of the school. I-Day was celebrated in Green Land Convent School, Dugri, being run by the same management.

BCM Dugri: Varinder Sharma, DEO, Elementary, inaugurated the annual exhibition at the school, in which various charts, displays and working models prepared by the students were exhibited.

KVM: At Kundan Vidya Mandir the celebrations started with a prabhát pheri in the morning at 6.30 am. It was flagged off by Principal S.C. Saxena.

Everest PlayWay: Children dressed up as national heroes An eye catching programme of songs, dances, and skits was presented.

Tur School: Tur School celebrated the day and the most appreciated and rewarding presentation was a script highlighting female foeticide and drug abuse and everyone was urged to come forward to fight these social evils.

Guru Gobind Singh Public School: Sixty years of Independence were celebrated in Guru Gobind Singh Public School, Daad, Pakhowal Road, with enthusiasm and fervour. On the occasion, children presented cultural items, patriotic skit, patriotic songs and a Poem Recitation Competition was organised in the school.

Rally taken out: In a novel gesture to celebrate the fervour and festivity of 60 Independence Day, various schools took out a rally this morning. Following suit of KVM’s last year rally, BCM, Shastri Nagar, BVM, Kitchlu N DAV, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, Tagore Public Schol, Aggar Nagar, Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines & Kundan Vidya Mandir, City School took out Prabhat Pheris in the areas around their schools. The prabhat pheris were flagged off at the same time with flying off of the tri-coloured balloons, bursting of crackers and raising of slogans. Patriotic songs were sung and all school campuses resounded with slogans to highlight the zeal and zest.

Bhartiya Vidya Mandir: Students of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Sector -39, Chandigarh Road, organised a colourful function in which the students presented several patriotic songs, poems and group dance on the songs like ‘Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka’.

Maple Bear Canadian pre-school: Maple Bear Canadian pre-school inaugurated its centre at Udham Singh Nagar with great fanfare today. Already exsisting Maple Bear Canadian Play Way and Nursery School celebrated the 60 years of Independence day on its campus with great enthusiasm and fervour. A fancy dress competition was organised on the occasion.

Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School: A function was organised at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, here on Tuesday in connection with the Independence Day celebrations at the school. The students and staff members paid homage and saluted the valiant martyrs of the nation. An inter-house choreography competition based on India's independence remained the special highlight of the day. Speech by the principal Sr Sobel motivated the staff and students to rededicate themselves to a future vision by continuing to follow the footsteps of freedom fighters.

SDP College for Women: A gala function was held at S.D.P College for Women, here on Wednesday in the college campus to mark the 60th anniversary of India’s Independence. Other S.D.P educational institutions including S.D.P Senior Secondary School, Hazoori Road, S.D.P Senior Secondary School, Basti Jodhewal, Urn Parkash Gupta, S.D.P Model Senior Secondary School, Quilla Mohalla and Ram Lal Bhasin Public School, Dugri also joined these celebrations. More than 5000 students of S.D.P institutions marched through streets with flags in their hands.

Government College for Women: Independence Day was celebrated on Wednesday by the students of Government College for Women. Flag was hoisted by principal Prabhjot Kaur. She told the students about the achievements of India during last 60 years. The N.S.S unit also held one day camp to mark the Independence Day. The cultural function was organised under the supervision of Manju Sahni, Sukhwinder Kaur and Sharanjit. N.S.S. president, Rajni, recited a poem. Prof. Sharanjit Parmar sang prayer song.

Functions were also held at Jesus Sacred Heart School, USPC Jain Public School, Drishti Jain Innovative Public School, Nankana Sahib Public School, Peace Public School, Tagore Public School, Dr Ranjit International School and Patanjali Uog Parshikshan Samiti.

Doraha
Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School: Independence Day was celebrated with great fervour at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School. Amrit Kaur Gurm, chief guest, on the occasion unfurled the national flag. A cultural programme was organised where the students presented poems and choreography, depicting the supreme sacrifice of valiant soldiers. These senior students, through a computer based seminar exhibited the main events of India’s freedom.

Rampur
Government High School: The students and staff of Government High School celebrated Independence Day with fun and frolic. The programme was marked by patriotic songs, skits and dances dominated the entire show on Wednesday. The stage was conducted by Madhu Bala. Among the various competitions organised on the I-Day include declamation contest, debate competitions, and an elaborate cultural show.

Sahnewal
Government Primary School: Ramesh Kumar Pappu, president Nagar Council, Sahnewal, unfurled the Tricolour at Nagar Council and Government Primary School Sahnewal, on Wednesday. He asked the students to respect the sanctity of their national flag and make every possible effort to work for the unity and stability of the country.

Tagore International Public School: The chairman of the school, H.L. Aneja, hoisted the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day at Tagore International Public School, on Wednesday. Apart from an elaborate cultural programme that was presented by the students. The principal of the school, Colonel Kulwinder Singh and director B.K. Aneja, exhorted the students to prove to be good citizens by spreading the message of patriotism.

Payal
Other Schools: The Tricolour was unfurled at Payal by Dr Neeru Katial Gupta, SDM, Payal, at the grain market on Wednesday. Various schools and colleges including Government Girls High School, Senior Secondary School, Uksi, Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, Senior Secondary School and others ensured their active participation in the Independence Day celebrations and presented a lively and colourful programme.

Mandi Gobindgarh
Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School: The school celebrated the 60th Independence Day with great enthusiasm on Wednesday. Principal Anju Bhatia unfurled the National flag and the National Anthem was sung. The day was marked by march past and cultural items like bhangra, group song and choreography.

Jagraon
Government Senior Secondary School: The Independence Day was celebrated at the premises of Government Senior Secondary School on Wednesday. The national flag was unfurled by Avinash Chander, chief parliament secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab. While remembering the martyrs Avinash said Lala Lajpat Rai, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Singh who laid down their lives during the struggle for freedom. His speech was followed by march past by police, home card and school N.C.C. cadet. Students who bagged top position were honoured. Also, the police officials including inspector Amarjit Singh, sub-inspector, Naveenpal Singh were honoured. Five sewing machines were distributed to the poor widows. It was followed by the colourful programme by the students of various schools.

Mandi Gobindgarh, August 15
On the occasion of the country’s 60th Independence Day, the Mandi Gobindgarh Municipal Council organised a function on Dasehra Ground here today.

Council chief Jagmeet Singh Sahota unfurled the National Flag. The Guru Tegh Bahadur Sewa Society provided two tricycles to physically-challenged persons.

Shalini Gupta, director of Desh Bhagat Institute, executive officer Vinod Kumar Mehta, PPCC secretary Joginder Singh Maini, industrialist Raj Bansal and manager of the Centurian Bank of Punjab D.R. Puri spoke on the occasion.

Hukam Chand Bansal, chairman, RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh, was honoured for his contribution to the field of education. Students presented a cultural programme.

The District Youth Congress celebrated Independence Day at its local office. Sandeep Ball, district president, hoisted the National Flag.

Amloh
A function was organised at the grain market here on Wednesday to mark Independence Day. Pradeep Singh, SDM, Amloh, unfurled the National Flag.

The police, NCC cadets and Scouts and Guides from various schools participated in a march past and saluted the flag. Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate Baljinder Singh, AICC member and MLA Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, former minister Dalip Singh Pandhi, DSP Gurpreet Singh, Akali leader Paramjit Singh Khanian, CDPO Satish Kumar, councillors, panches and sarpanches were among those present on the occasion. Students presented a cultural programme. Four sewing machines were given to needy women.

The Tricolour was hoisted by local council chief Lal Chand Garg on the municipal complex.

The block Congress celebrated Independence Day at the old grain market. AICC member and MLA Sadhu Singh Dharamsot unfurled the National Flag.

Samrala
Independence Day was celebrated here today with great pomp and show in the grounds of the local market committee.

Local SDM Sukhdev Singh unfurled the National Flag while local MLA Jagjeewan Singh Kheernia and former MLA Amrik Singh Dhillon were the special guests on the occasion.

Rajinder Thakur, who works with a restaurant, was honoured for saving the life of six persons who tried to commit suicide from Neelon Bridge last year.

Mandi Ahmedgarh
Independence Day was celebrated here today with enthusiasm. Several official functions were organised in the area on the occasion. The main function was organised at the local MGMN Senior Secondary School.

A colourful cultural programme presented by students of the school, besides those of Lal Bahadur Shashtri Public School and the Janta College for Women was the highlight of the function. Rajnish Sharma, president of the Vidya Parcharak Sabha, and Ravinder Puri, group leader, unfurled the National Flag.

Tek Chand Diwan, freedom fighter, was felicitated on the occasion.

Jatinder Bhola, president of the municipal council, unfurled the Tricolour at Town Hall.

The Bharat Vikas Parishad and the city units of the Congress and the BJP also organised a function at Bhagat Singh Chowk to mark Independence Day.

Similar functions were organised at DAV High School, Kennedy High School, Guru Nanak Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Anand Isher Senior Secondary School, Maya Devi Public School, Green Valley Public School, Jain Muni Shri Kundan Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Victoria Public School, Guru Har Krishan Senior Secondary School Phalewal and GHG Khalsa Senior Secondary School.

Bikram Jit Singh Khalsa, chief parliamentary secretary, unfurled the Tricolor at a subdivisional function at Khanna.

An elaborate cultural programme by students of various schools and colleges of the area marked the occasion.

The National Flag was hoisted by Neeru Katyal, SDM, at the grain market in Payal. Rattan Singh, DSP, was also present.

Ludhiana
Patriotism reigned strong and the tricolor flew high at the Independence Day Celebrations at the Christian Medical College and Hospital here today.

CMC and its associate Dental and Nursing Colleges came together at the Dental College grounds where the ceremony started early in the morning with a special college chapel service and invocation by Rev Stanley Thomas. It was followed by welcome of the chief guest, Yogesh Goyal, Chairman of the Punjab Pollution Control Board. Goyal hoisted the National Flag and presided over the march past.

VC highlights PAU’s contribution

Independence Day at Punjab Agricultural University was celebrated with great enthusiasm. The vice-chancellor, M.S. Kang hoisted the Tricolour at the flag post and offered greetings to the people. He also inspected the parade by university NCC cadets. Elaborating the great role played by the PAU and Punjab, in the past, for making country self-sufficient in food, VC said increase in agricultural production has come at a price.

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), also celebrated the function with great enthusiasm. Dr V.K. Taneja, vice-chancellor, GADVASU unfurled the National Flag at the administrative block of the University. Speaking on the occasion, Taneja said, Punjab has been and continuous to be a key player in national agricultural and animal husbandry and is the food basket of country.

Vet varsity animal welfare centre at Gureh

Dr V.K Taneja, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, today inaugurated the first Animal Welfare Centre of GADVASU at Gureh village near here today.

Various activities at this centre, include education and training of livestock and fish farmers, supply of good germplasm, services and technical guidance in feeding, housing, clean milk production, animal vaccination, reproductive management, upgradation of agriculture byproducts, fodder production and conservation, mineral supply and value addition etc. During the benchmark survey of the village, it revealed that there are 600 families in the village and 80 per cent farmers were involved in dairy farming.

Dr Taneja said in his inaugural address that the centre will provide an excellent opportunity for different departments of the university to undertake the adaptive trials of the technologies and receive the feedback which will be helpful for the refinement of technologies and future strategies.

Efforts to develop Gureh village as dairy village under this project at state as well as the country level will be initiated.
