School discontinues mid-day meal for slum children

For the underprivileged students of Colony No 5 School the wait for their mid-day meal today was never-ending. Joginder Pal, who used to daily bring their share of meal from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 45, Chandigarh, came back with a ‘rehri’ empty as the GMSSS-45 authorities had discontinued their mid-day meal.

Man tries to set in-laws’ house on fire

In a bizarre case, a man allegedly tried to set the house of his in-laws on fire in Sector 37 here today. According to his wife Deepti, who has been residing at her parents’ house, her husband Vipin Kumar threw a bottle filled with kerosene after lighting it at their house this afternoon.

Bid to rape 9-yr-old

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Mahesh Grover, today issued directions to the UT police to place on court’s record all original documents in sealed cover, including CCTV-recordings, medical examination reports, PGI post-mortem report, legal papers, related to the death of Anil Kumar, a colony no 4 resident, who died in police custody allegedly due to torture.

No NRI quota from next year: PU

Panjab University today informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it had decided to abolish the NRI-sponsored and industry-sponsored quota from next year.

HC notice to Mohali SSP

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Mahesh Grover, today issued notice to Punjab DGP and SSP, Mohali, over a plea seeking CBI inquiry into the death of Naresh, allegedly at the Balongi police post on August 12. The petitioner, World Human Rights Protection Council, had averred that Naresh, alias Rajan, had allegedly been tortured at the Balongi police post, following which he died.

The hearing on the case titled ‘Court on its own motion vs UT adminstration’ was adjourned to August 24 following UT counsel’s plea that he needed time to seek instructions on the issue as to what action was contemplated against the erring news-report in view of the affidavits filed by adviser to UT administrator Lalit Sharma and UT’s deputy commissioner R.K. Rao.
