Then again the health check-up will be conducted after six months to monitor the health of the students, added general secretary of SHARP.

Indian doctors in US flay N-deal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 20
Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) and the US-based Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) have expressed concerns about the negotiated nuclear accord between US President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

By further undermining the currently unstable non-proliferation order, this agreement would encourage additional states to acquire nuclear weapons and gravely damage the prospects of global nuclear disarmament.

It would also further worsen the ongoing nuclear arms race in South Asia by significantly increasing India’s capabilities for fissile material production, the statement said.

The associations have called upon the Parliament of India and the United States Congress to reject this agreement as it is dangerous to international peace and security.

They have also called upon the members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group to reject this agreement as it contrary to their objectives and the United Nations Security Council.

Faulty elevators add to patients’ pain

Chandigarh, August 20
Patients, their attendants as well as staff members, including doctors, had to face hardship at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, as all five elevators in A Block of the hospital went out of order yesterday.

According to the authorities, two of the elevators have been out of order for the past two months as the company responsible for installing and maintaining these could not repair these despite repeated reminders.

Two of the five elevators are meant for patients, while the remaining three are for doctors, staff and transporting material to other storeys.

Attendants of patients had a harrowing time as they had to pull trolleys to shift their patients from the first floor up to the fifth floor.

Doctors and other staff members had to tread through the ramps or climb the stairs time and again to attend to their patients in different wards. Three elevators were, however, made functional this evening. — TNS

Chandigarh, August 20
The life of at least 10 patients at the cardiac care unit (CCU) of the PGI was endangered when the electricity supply to the unit got snapped on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

According to sources, the power supply remained cut for more that 10 minutes, exposing patients to danger as ventilators and monitors in the unit stopped working and the staff on duty had to use ambu bags. Only three doctors, supported by an equal number of nurses, were on duty at the time of the incident.

According to cardiologists, the incident could have lead to a tragedy as the patients in the CCU “remain on machines running on the electricity”. Though ambu bags could be operated manually, heart pumps and other instruments needed electricity supply to work, said experts.

A spokesperson for the PGI, however, said the electricity to the CCU remained suspended for five minutes as one of the electric panels was burnt.

The lone goal was executed by Sukhjeet Singh during the 53rd minute of an otherwise dull match.

Tribune News Service

Mohali, August 20
With the exit of seven Punjab Ranji team players, including senior players namely Dinesh Mongia, Reetinder Sodhi and Rajesh Sharma, the team has suffered a big setback just before the beginning of the new cricket session.

The players have left the BCCI and joined the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) today. The other players, who left the team, are Manish Sharma (opening batsman), Sumit Kalia (leg spinner), Ishan Malhotra (pacer) and Sarabjit Singh (wicket-keeper, batsman).

Besides Rajesh Sharma’s lethal off-spin bowling, the team would definitely miss the services of experienced all-rounders Mongia and Sodhi, who have international experience.

Mongia has made 8028 in the 121 first-class matches while Sodhi has chipped in and 3680 in 69 matches.

In bowling, Mongia has snapped 46 wickets, conceding 1687 runs while Sodhi has taken 102 wickets giving 2991 runs in the domestic cricket. Many a time these players pulled the team out of critical situations. The team had already been struggling for the past two sessions. The team could not reach even to the semifinals of the Ranji Trophy in 2004-05 and 2005-06 while in 2003-04, it had finished runners-up.

After the exodus, the team has been left with a few senior players like Pankaj Dharmani, Ravneet Ricky and Gagandeep Singh.

However, According to the top brass of the Punjab Cricket Association, including the coach, the development will not make any big difference to the team in the coming season.

Revealing his feelings on the development, newly appointed coach Gursharan Singh said, “Undoubtedly, the whole planning and set-up of the team has got a setback, but cricket is a team game so I am not worried at all. I am taking it positively.”

“The team has been struggling for the past two sessions and the bunch was a part of the then team,” viewed the coach. However, it’s a new challenge for me and I will take it with positive mindset, adds Singh.

PCA secretary M.P. Pandove said, “We have a very talented crop, which would now get a chance for which they have been waiting for long. The players are free to go anywhere. We are not bothered by the development. Instead, I am hopeful that the new team will do better.”

At present, the team is playing in the Buchi Babu Tournament being held at Chennai.

Off spinner Charanjit Singh and batsman Mayank Siddanah would join the team in place of Reetinder Sodhi and Rajesh Sharma, said Deepak Sharma, Assistant Secretary of PCA.

“As the team has already two wicket-keepers, Uday Kaul and Pankaj Dharmani, so we felt no need to send any player in place of wicket-keeper Sarabjeet Singh, who also left the team along with Sodhi and Sharma”, added Deepak.
