Cardiac surgery facility to benefit newborn
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 22
Grecian Hospital, Sector 69, Mohali, is going to initiate a special programme in October under which neonatal and paediatric cardiac surgery will be conducted at the hospital itself.

Considered as highly complex among all surgical procedures, as many as 10 such surgeries will be performed by a team of trained cardiac surgeons of Grecian Multispeciality Hospital with cooperation and involvement of prestigious paediatrics cardiac surgery unit of Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore.

Giving details about the programme at a press conference here, yesterday, Dr Shivpreet Singh Samra, director, Grecian Hospital, said, “ Since, barring the Bangalore-based unit, the expertise and logistics is not available anywhere else in India, so it is our initiative to bridge that gap and provide all care and technique for the patients of this region”.

Further, special discounted packages for this initiative and open heart surgery are also being offered to the patients who can’t afford the high cost of cardiac surgeries.

Panchkula, August 22
In its endeavour to provide quality health care, General Hospital, Sector 6, has acquired the first-of-its kind Bone Density Measurement machine. Still on trial, the machine would be commissioned for public use within a fortnight.

This latest acquisition puts the hospital ahead of others in the region with none of them, including PGIMER, GMCH-32 and GH-16, having the machine.

“A special training session was organised for the faculty of the Orthpaedics Department. Since the nearest place where these machines are in use is in Delhi, our doctors were trained at Escorts and R.R. Hospital. Back after their training, they have begun using the machine on a trial basis,” explains medical superintendent Dr V.K. Bansal.

The machine, costing about Rs 25 lakh, not only provides the bone density of the patient but can also be used to determine the body mass index (BMI). “This will enable a doctor to know the risk of cardiovascular disease in the patient so that remedial steps can be taken,” explains Dr Umesh Modi.

Earlier, the hospital used to rely on X-rays to determine the bone density of patients suffering from osteoporosis. “The X-rays are a very primitive technique and are not very reliable since it only shows problems after nearly 40 per cent loss has occurred. This means that the patient can begin treatment only after the disease is at an advanced stage,” says Dr Modi.

Under the second method, where ultrasound is used to determine bone density, it could only determine the bone density at the heel or the wrist. Used extensively during camps since, it has the disadvantage of not being able to give results for bone density of the hip and spine.

“The Dual Energy X-ray Absorbtimetry or DEXA method is the standard worldwide. In fact, at the hospitals we trained at, the machine is extensively used to determine the BMI. All it takes is a couple of minutes to scan the patient and provide the results. The best part is that it can scan the entire body and give results of individual parts,” Dr Raman says.

With the arrival of this machine, patients having to undergo this test are likely to pay very nominal charges. “This test costs Rs 1,000 (for each part) at the private diagnostic centres. Though we are yet to fix the rates, they will be much less those of the private centres,” he said.

Chandigarh, August 22
After joining the ‘rebel’ Indian Cricket League (ICL), international cricketer Dinesh Mongia and Reetinder Sodhi are still nurturing the dream of playing for their country despite the ban by the BCCI.

Both players were in the city today after signing their agreement with the ICL along with four other players of the Punjab Ranji team, just before the start of the new cricket session.

“Playing for the country is the utmost aim of every cricketer. We can still attract the attention of the board as well as cricket aficionados with our top-level performance in the league tournaments. The public would also support us after seeing our performance,” said Mongia at Mani Majra here today.

Sodhi was of the view that the dispute between the BCCI and ICL would be resolved soon. “As both organisations aim at the betterment of the game, hopefully they will join hands very soon,” said Sodhi at the Chandigarh airport before leaving for his home town Patiala.

Parrying the query whether lucrative amount was the reason behind their joining the league, both cricketers maintained that only money factor did not prompt them to join the league.

“Good cricket automatically brings in money. As a professional, I want to play more and more cricket. For the purpose, I am ready to play for anyone, including my club, my state, county, the league or country,” said stylish southpaw Mongia.

All-rounder Sodhi, who led the U-15 team to clinch the world cup in 1996 at England, sees the format of the ICL as a new challenge as well as new opportunity for the cricketers. “The exciting and challenging format of the league prompted me to join it,” said Sodhi.

On being asked where would they practise if the state associations would not allow the ‘rebels’ to use their grounds, Mongia said the services of the coaching centres could be used by them in that situation .

However, the cricketers said ICL chairman Kapil Dev had assured the players that all arrangements would be made in a couple of weeks.

With the coming up of the league, the cricketers now have one more platform and more opportunities to show their talent. Apart from that, sharing the field with great guns like Brian Lara and other top-level cricketers will provide the players a great experience and exposure, feels Sodhi.

Seeing a bright future of the league, Sodhi said, “We will start with a 20-day preparatory camp, commencing at Chennai from August 29. The Twenty20 tournament by the ICL will take place in October,” said Sodhi. However, both cricketers showed ignorance about the schedule and venues of the tournament.

Mohali to have multipurpose complex
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 22
The Punjab Government has decided to allot two acres of land on lease to the Punjab Olympic Association (POA) for the construction of Punjab Olympics Bhavan and a multipurpose complex just opposite to the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium at Mohali.

Besides housing the offices of the Punjab sports department, the state-of-the-art multipurpose complex will have a gymnasium, museum, Hall of Fame and a club house. Secretary-general of the POA Raja K.S. Sidhu said, “All these facilities will be extended to local residents and they should not necessarily be sportspersons.”

Raja Sidhu further said the museum would house the personal sports equipments of sports legends like Balbir Senior, Ajit Pal, athletes like Milkha Singh. “These initiatives are being taken to let our present generation know about these old sportspersons. There is also a proposal for establishing a video library, which would store video films of old matches, sportpersons’ achievements and present international shooting events.”

The construction work on the complex would soon start after discussing the public-private partnership through the PIDB. The sports department would raise a fence around the outer area of the complex to prevent any unauthorised use. At present, the space is being used for parking vehicles during international cricket matches held at the PCA stadium. Punjab sports secretary R.P.S. Pawar said the PCA would have to pay for using the land as parking lot.

POA president and member of parliament Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa yesterday made an inspection of the site to be leased out for 99 years to the POA. Punjab sports director Pargat Singh, joint director Chanchal Randhawa, additional joint director S.L. Lote, POA treasurer P.S. Virk and P.S. Kumedan were among others present.
