Shikha scripts win for St Stephen’s

The lone goal netted by Shikha helped St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, to win the top honours in the final football (u-19 girls) match of the inter-school tournament at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here today.

St Stephen’s beat DAV Public School, Sector 8, by 1-0.

In chess, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, won the top position in both u-19 and u-17 categories. The competition was held at St Kabir Public School-26, here today.

Football (u-19 girls): 1 St Stephen’s-45, 2 DAV-8, 3 Sacred Heart-26.

SN Vohra Tourney
Malwa school whip GRM

Three goals each by Akashdeep and Kulbir Singh helped Malwa Khalsa School, Ludhiana, to thrash GRM School, New Delhi, by 6-0 in the first semifinal league match of the 6th SN Vohra Memorial Sub-junior (U-14) Hockey Tournament today. The tournament is being held at the Sector 42 hockey stadium.

It was Akashdeep, who opened the account with a field goal in the fifth minute and then extended the lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute.

Kulbir scored three goals in the 21st, 51st and 56th minutes. The last goal came through Akashdeep in the last minute of the game. Akashdeep was declared the man of the match.

In the second league match, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Academy, Amritsar, got the better of Baba Uttam Singh Hockey (BUSH) Academy, Khadoor Sahib, by 3-1.

Gurdeep opened the account for Amritsar in the seventh minute. Buoyed by the lead, Ramandeep netted two goals in 27th and 35th minutes.

Simrandeep of Khadoor Sahib reduced the margin by scoring a goal in the 37th minute but after that the team failed to capitalise the chances that came their way. Ramandeep was awarded with the man of the match title.

Tomorrow, BUSH Academy, Khadoor Sahib, will play against Malwa school, Ludhiana, while GRM, Delhi, will face Maharaja Ranjit Singh Academy, Amritsar.

Naresh, Siddharth bowl Chandigarh to victory

Chandigarh, August 23
A deadly spell by Naresh Kumar (4 for 18) guided Chandigarh to register a win over Mohali on the basis of the lead of the first innings in a match of the Punjab Inter-district Tournament played at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

Naresh ripped apart the batting line-up of Mohali, dismissing them on meagre 126 runs in 53.4 overs. Siddharth Kaul also claimed four wickets, conceding 64 runs. Mohali decided to bat first after winning the toss. The team scored 126 runs in the first innings with the average knocks by Sumit Ohri (18) and Navneet (28).

Chandigarh took the lead of 29 runs as the team got all out on 155 in 69.3 overs. Gaurav Gambhir played the key role, scoring 52 runs followed by Vaibhav (25) and Gurkirat Singh (35).

For Mohali, Harmeet and Parminder claimed three wickets each, conceding 55 and 19 runs, respectively, whereas Harman Singh took two for 38.

Chandigarh won the match on the basis of the 1st innings lead.

Table soccer tourney begins today

The Table Soccer Federation of India is organising an invitation All-India Table Soccer Championship from August 24 to 26 at Chandigarh, according to Balwinder Singh Johal, president of the Table Soccer Federation of India.

The tournament would be organised at Banyan Tree School, Sector 48.

Nearly 400 participants from 12 states, including Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Assam and Uttar Pradesh, besides hosts Chandigarh would take part in the championship, Johal said.

St Joseph's girls clinch chess title

Chandigarh, August 23
St Joseph's, Sector 44, defeated Mount Carmel, Sector 47, by 2-1 in the final of the UT Inter-school girls’ chess tournament at St Stephen's, Sector 45, here today.

Meanwhile, Sacred Heart, Sector 26, secured the third position as they prevailed over Government Model High School (GMHS)-32, by 2-1.

U-14 (final): St Joseph's-44 b Mount Carmel-47 by 2-1 (Diksha Verma b Samridhi Piplani 13-3, Himanshi b Anushi Sharma 11-0, Sakshi and Prachi lost to Gunjan and Harleen 1-10); semifinals: St Joseph's b GMHS-32 by 2-1 and Mount Carmel-47 b Sacred Heart-26 by 3-0.

Cricket ground at GMSSS-32

A new cricket ground having turf of similar standards as that of PCA Stadium, Mohali, was inaugurated at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, here.

The Chandigarh Sports Club has constructed this turf. The club will provide free cricket coaching to upcoming players here.

Trials for Katoch Shield team on Aug 27

Selection trials for the Katoch Shield cricket team (KSCT) of the Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA), affiliated to the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), will be held on August 27 at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here.

The selected team will take part in the inter-district tournament organised by the PCA.

Players studying or living in Chandigarh are eligible for the trials. The players should bring their birth certificates along with them.
