AMRITSAR
Murder:
Sub-inspector Shiv Kumar posted at police line, Amritsar (Rural) was today found killed on the railway tracks near the Joura Phatak here. He allegedly committed suicide under depression as he felt humiliated when a senior police officer had caught him drunk and locked him in lock-up few months ago. He had allegedly attempted suicide earlier also.

Arrested: The Amritsar police has arrested five drug peddlers, including a woman, following seizure of 600 grams smack on Thursday. The district police chief Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh said the accused used to bring smack from Delhi and Meerut and sold in various localities of Amritsar especially in Chheharta, Vijaynagar and Maqboolpura. The drug peddlers who have been arrested are Inderpal, Ravi, Pinka, Raj Karan Singh, Sunny , Rekha and Jagjit Singh. 

BARNALA
Book release
: In a small function organised at Barnala, Tamilnadu governor S. Surjeet Singh Barnala released a book of English poetry ‘ The Dumb Night’ penned by the famous Punjabi writer Jai Kishan Kaushal. This is his first collection of poems in English language. Earlier he has two volumes of poetry “Sheesham De Patten and Main Hazar Han” in Punjabi language to his credit.

BATHINDA
Campaign:
The massive campaign launched against drug addiction in the district by Jatinder Jain, DIG, Faridkot range, today got huge response when hundreds of students of the local Saint Joseph Convent Secondary School took oath that they would keep themselves away from drugs apart from fighting against this evil. On the occasion,about 50 students of the Police Public School delivered a message against drug addiction by displaying posters and catchy slogans. 

Hoshiarpur
Body recovered:
Body of a 30-year-old woman was recovered from the bushes near Sainchan village on Thursday. The deceased wore red clothes and carried a white purse. According to the police the woman may have died of poisoning. The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for post- mortem. 

1 killed, 2 hurt: A woman, Malika, was killed while her husband Bachitter and another woman, Rano Devi were injured when a truck hit the autorickshaw in which they were travelling on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh highway on Thursday. Truck driver Gurcharan Singh has been arrested.

Drug capsules seized from jail:
Around 2,500 drug capsules and a bottle of liquor were found on the central jail premises here on Thursday. Confirming the reports, SHO Mohinder Singh said, “We did seize capsules from the jail’s premises, but they were not recovered from any jail inmate. They were found lying abandoned on the premises.” He said they might have been thrown in from outside the jail. However, investigations were still on but no FIR was registered. 

Food festival: Manoranjan Kalia, minister for local bodies, will inaugurate a food festival at the Chandigarh Press Club tomorrow. He will cut a cake made by the students of the Hotel and Catering Management Institute (HCMI) bakery. The event is being organised by final-year students of the HCMI. 

Conferred: The Punjab Government has conferred “Punjab Sarkar Parman Patra” on Dr Jatinder Kaur Arora, additional director (biotechnology), Punjab State Council for Science and Technology for her contribution in the field of science and technology especially biotechnology. Dr Arora is also the recipient of the national award for the development of women through application of science and technology presented to her by the President. — TNS

BILASPUR
Charges refuted:
Onkar Singh Chandel president Bilaspur district Congress Committee and supporter of forest minister Ramlal Thakur has strongly rebutted all the charges of Pradesh Congress Committee member Krishan Kumar Kaushal against Thakur. He said the falsehood campaign of Kaushal against Thakur was nothing more than a personal vendetta based on political rivalry.

NDPS Act: District and Sessions Judge A.S. Jaswal on Thursday sentenced Chaman Lal of Gosalla village (Kullu district) under the NDPS Act. The accused was found carrying 1.100 kgm of charas in his bag. He will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 8 years along with an additional fine of Rs 1 lakh. In case of default in payment of fine, he would have to undergo simple imprisonment for two more years. 

Doc found absent: Doctor and pharmacist posted at the government ayurveda dispensary at Tiyun Khas, near Suharghat, were found absent when district ayurveda officer Yograj Sharma paid a surprise visit to the dispensary around 10.30 am on Tuesday. He said strict action would be taken against officials indulging in absenteeism. 

Expedition: The 12-day sailing expedition of 1 HP Naval NCC Unit concluded in Gobind Sagar on Thursday. Commanding officer Commander Amar Singh said 50 cadets, including Ambika Sharma and Vanita drawn from Senior Naval NCC wings of Bilaspur PG College, Sarkaghat PG College and Government Degree College Ghumarwin participated in it. He said the expedition traversed 479 kms in Gobind Sagar and cadets were apprised with sealife, apart form being provided technical training concerning their trade.

Dharamsala
Old woman goes missing:
Octogenarian Kalawati, grandmother of a journalist working in Dainik Tribune, has been missing from her native village Kathiara in Dehra subdivision of Kangra district since August 10. Her son Mahinder Singh said she had gone out  for a walk but did not come back. As her memory was weak she might have forgotten her way to home, he said. A complaint in this regard has been lodged with Jawalamukhi  police station.

HAMIRPUR
Arrested:
The police has arrested a local youth, Ashok Kumar, for allegedly running a ‘satta’ network in the town on Thursday, police sources said The police has recovered a few slips from him and also traced his links with people in Hoshiapur.

SHIMLA
One killed:
One person was killed and another injured, when a tempo in which they were travelling fell into a deep gorge near Theog on Thursday. The accident took place in the afternoon when the vehicle was on its way from Theog to Sandhu. The deceased was identified as Jagdish Sharma (30). Tempo owner Gopal Singh (44) was injured. He has been admitted to Theog hospital.
