Assault: GCG students block traffic

A day after a student of BA (III) of the fine arts department of Government College for Girls, Sector 11, was reportedly slapped by an unidentified youth, more than a hundred students, expressing solidarity with the victim, today blocked traffic at the road in front of the college.

Honoured on I-Day, NRI held for forgery
Two passports seized
Mohali, August 24
An NRI who was honoured on the Independence Day function in Phase VI here was arrested by the police on charges of cheating and forgery. Police sources said Amarjit Singh Virk was arrested on August 19. Two passports were seized from him.

Amritsar cops seek addresses of students

The Amritsar police has started investigations into the circumstances under which Manjot, a student of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 (GMCH), committed suicide on August 5 at his home in Amritsar. The family of Manjot allege that he committed suicide after he was subjected to ragging in the college.

Army team to scale Kinnaur peak

To commemorate the diamond jubilee of the Western Command, which completes 60 years of its raising on September 15, the Army has launched a mountaineering expedition to scale Mount Leo Pargial. The peak lies in Kinnaur district and is 6,673 metres in height.

City gets 28 mm rainfall

The city woke up to heavy rainfall this morning and by the end of the day it had recorded 28 mm. Although not the heaviest rainfall of the season, 28 mm, Met says, will help the city reduce its rain deficit.

The present plan of de-silting of the Sukhna Lake is too costly. The lake is proposed to be de-silting through dredging Rs 52 crore. To know about the cost comparison, I looked for places where similar works were done. It was found out that Algeria under took a prototype study on one of its lake to remove silt. Findings are put below.

Purse containing jewellery stolen

Vikas Kumar Sharma of Sector 11 has reported to the police that his wife’s purse containing Rs 1,200 and gold jewellery worth Rs 25,000 was stolen from his residence on Wednesday night. The police has registered a case.

Can you guess why nearly 50 per cent students in most government schools in the city prefer to sit on the floor than benches or chairs meant for them? The reason: Sitting on benches, they cannot read the blackboard. It has nothing to do with their eyesight. Nabard grant for schools, says Kanwaljit
Mohali, August 24
Nabard has cleared a sum of Rs 123 crore for schools in Punjab and three schools in every district will be given Rs 50 lakh each so that proper building and infrastructure can be provided. Capt Kanwaljit Singh, cooperation minister, said this after inaugurating a newly constructed block of Government Elementary School in Phase VII here today.

Water entered the corridors of UILS at Panjab University after the downpour in Chandigarh on Friday. The University Institute of Legal Studies’ (UILS) cup of woes seems to be overflowing, literally. Following the heavy showers today, water accumulated in several places on the ground floor including the foyer of the building. Students were seen making their way, warily through the corridors wet with rainwater, holding their jeans and trousers up.
