Girl beaten up by gang of teachers

Bangalore, August 24
Despite the recent guidelines issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, a 11-year-old girl was beaten up by a group of teachers for not doing her homework properly, leading to injuries on various parts of her body, police said.

A case has been registered against the school management on charges of assault, molestation and use of abusive words.

However, no arrests have been made. The girl, Sangeetha, a class six student of Vinoda School in Guruguntepalaya, was taken to K C General Hospital for treatment after she was beaten by her teachers, the sources said here today.

Last week the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had directed states to take steps to check incidents of corporal punishment. A directive had been issued to treat all corporal punishments as a breach of human rights.

The Supreme Court has already banned punishments in schools.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Women Commission has issued a notice to the school management and the seven teachers who had beaten Sangeetha, commission sources said. “It is for the police now to take immediate action,” Commission’s Chairperson Pramila Nesargi said. — PTI
