Double Deal: A thrilling suspense
Vimal Sumbly
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 25
It was quite a thriller full of suspense right till the end. But the drama - Double Deal, directed by Mahesh Dattani, had lesser drama and action than expected and too much of dialogue. A brilliant adoption of Richard Stockwell's "Killing Time", this play could have impressed the audiences more than it did had the action been not replaced with narrative.

The play revolved around two main characters Jeet (Mahesh Manjrekar) and Rhea (Sandhya Mridul). They just meet as strangers and soon fell in love. As the drama unfolds it turns out to be too much of deceit and betrayal.

The audience interest is sustained by good dialogue delivery by both the outstanding actors who are already known on the silver screen.

Jeet meets Rhea in a shopping mall, where he pays her grocery bill as she finds her purse having been stolen. Later, it turns out that Jeet had stolen the purse. It was a part of his design to come close and learn about her husband Satbir. Jeet had had an enmity with Satbir.

Interestingly, the two had robbed a bank for which Jeet had to spend ten years in jail. To everybody's surprise it turns out that Rhea was the mastermind of the bank robbery.

Satbir, the invisible character despite his role in the play being too important and inalienable, had the stolen money. Rhea and Jeet plan to kill him. Rhea calls him to Jeet's place.

Even in this plan they are not sincere to each other. Jeet wants to kill Satbir and ensure that Rhea is imprisoned for his murder. Rhea wants to do the reverse. As Satbir is about to reach them, Rhea goes out and kills him there. She ties Jeet inside to make out as if he had killed Satbir. She makes an exit. Jeet rises again to have a look at the video he had installed to record everything. The play comes to an instant end there.

Satbir's off stage murder could have been enacted on the stage to add more drama to the thriller and audience would have certainly appreciated it more.
