Fresh hope for elderly hearing impaired
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 25
Gurbaksh Singh, a septuagenarian and hearing impaired would spend his time in virtual isolation. Since he was too hard of hearing he would find it difficult to mix up with people and talk to them. The isolation led to depression. However, after he was given a computer programmed digital hearing aid, he is living a fresh life.

According to Dr Naresh Malhotra, northern zone president of the ENT and Head Neck Surgeons Forum, hearing loss has been found to be one of the main causes of depression among the elderly. He pointed out; with age one tends to lose the hearing power. In the advanced age the damage is too much and people feel isolated.

He disclosed that the computer programmed hearing digital aids have done wonders to the elderly. He said, like Gurbaksh Singh, there have been scores of others who have "literally found a fresh lease of life" after they got hearing aids. He sought to dispel the notion that hearing loss cannot be corrected in the advanced age. He said he has recorded recovery up to 60 per cent hearing among those who had completely lost the capacity.

Dr Malhotra said, while loss of hearing is a natural process, but due to increased levels of noise, it occurs relatively earlier now. Besides, the loss is more severe than, say about two decades ago when there was not too much of noise outside. He said, like everything has been compensated by technology, so is the hearing loss and it is better to avail the benefits.

Ludhiana, August 25
A free cardiac and medical camp will be organised by the doctors of Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) and DMCH under the aegis of “Om Namah Shivay Samiti” at Parbhat Puri Charitable Hospital, Mandi Gobindgarh, tomorrow.

The team of consultants who will be attending the camp include Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist, HDHI, Dr Naved Aslam, consultant cardiologist, HDHI and Dr Parminder Singh, professor in the department of endocrinology at DMCH.

Commenting on the significance of camps which are attended by super specialists, Dr Wander said, “At times, the lack of awareness and financial constraints make many sections of our society neglect their own health. Diseases like hypertension may seem quite innocuous but over a period of time actually lead to serious medical complications. Our purpose of participating in these free camps is to create a more aware and health-conscious society and also to ensure availability of expert counselling to those who otherwise may find it too costly to seek. Our past experience is that camps, like the one at Mandi Gobindgarh, which are held on a regular basis at fixed locations, go a long way in serving both these objectives.
