‘Ma Mainu Mari Na’ staged
Ludhiana, August 26 This time she chose the most pressing problem Punjabi society is faced with. The son fixation that has been leading to the murder of the girl child before her birth. “Maa Mainu Mari Na”, a play written and directed by Nirmal, was touching. It best reflected the traumatic dilemma of an educated couple who do not find any difference between the male and the female child. However, they are made to succumb to the social pressures where a son is still preferred over a daughter. And not just that, the daughter is not allowed to be born. She is simply murdered in the womb. The play also depicts as to how the desire for a male successor leads to atrocities on daughters-in-law, that too at the hands of their mothers-in-law. It also rues the abuse of technology in identifying the sex of the foetus in the womb and its subsequent killing in case it is female. The play was organised by the Rishi Chaitanya Trust, under a project Shakti, an initiative of Anandmurti Gurumaa. |

Udhas adds spark to ghazal nite
Ludhiana, August 26 Udhas, credited with popularising ghazals among Indians, presented popular ghazals like, “Niklo na benaqab...”, “Ai gamein zindagi, kuchh to de mashwara...”, “Ek taraf uska ghar, ek taraf maikada...”. As the audience got involved, Pankaj did not disappoint. When he presented, “Chandi jaisa roop hai tera, sone jaise baal...” the entire audience joined to sing along with him. However, this unprecedented involvement and excitement of youth, must have made him change his opinion about them as earlier, while talking to reporters, Udhas had regretted the youths’ lack of interest in the Indian classical traditions. He said, the new generation was getting more and more inclined towards western culture. Talking about his forthcoming albums, he informed that one contained seven ghazals by great sufi saints. He said, it was an experiment and he was anxiously waiting for the listeners’ reaction. |
