250 examined at cardiac camp
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 27
More than 250 persons were examined at a free cardiac and medical camp organised by a team of doctors from Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI), Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and Deep Hospital, under the aegis of the Om Namah Shivay Sewa Samiti at Parbhat Puri Charitable Hospital in Mandi Gobindgarh yesterday.

A team of consultants, including Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist, HDHI, Dr Parminder Singh, professor in the department of endocrinology at the DMCH, and Dr Vikram Brar from the department of neurosurgery at Deep Hospital, examined the patients at the camp and rendered follow up advice.

Addressing the patients on the occasion, Dr Wander urged them to give maximum attention to their lifestyles to keep their heart fit and healthy.

“For a healthy heart, what is needed is a balanced diet, regular exercise, mental relaxation and a strict no to smoking. For the right diet, one should eat less fat, less sodium, fewer calories and more fibre. Physical exercise, through increased blood levels of endorphins and nitric oxide, brings physical and mental relaxation and a feeling of well being. The hardest part of an exercise routine is getting started. Once you have established a regular pattern of exercise, you will find yourself following it," said Dr Wander.

He further added that there was enough data available to incriminate the smoking habit to a high incidence of heart attacks, angina, peripheral arterial blockages and sudden cardiac death. Also if a stage was reached when heart disease had developed in a patient, meditation and yoga could serve to complement medical intervention but regular and right medication was equally essential.

At the camp, a team of technicians conducted free ECG, ECHO and blood-sugar testing. In addition, medicines were distributed free of cost, informed Rajesh Sharma, one of the camp organisers.

Neglect main cause of eye, dental diseases
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 27
Major eye aliments, including myopia and hypermetropia, and dental ailments, including pyorrhea, are caused due to lack of concern among residents of rural and suburban areas about eye care and oral hygiene. Malnutrition and lack of knowledge about nutritional contents of various food items aggravated the problem.

This was stated by a team of ophthalmologists and dental surgeons after examining around 350 persons at a camp organised jointly by the Sarav Bharti Naujwan Sabha and the local unit of the body of Christians on the local Jagera road here today. Jatinder Bhola, president, Municipal Council, inaugurated the camp. Kishori Lal Badhan, former president, presided over the closing ceremony.

According to Dr Poonam, ophthalmologist, and Dr Sandhya, dental surgeon, ignorance about the nutritional value of various food items and unconcern about eye care and oral hygiene were major causes for various disorders of eyes and teeth.

Referring to observations made during the examination of about 350 persons, the team of doctors said a majority of the persons examined at the camp had ignored eye care and oral hygiene. “Besides ignoring proper hygiene care of eyes and teeth, they paid little attention to nutritional constituents required for optimum vision and healthy teeth,” maintained the doctors.

Fifty persons were identified for intra ocular operation and the vision of equal number of persons was corrected with the use of spectacles.

The beneficiaries were provided nutritional supplements, including vitamin C, iron tablets and vitamin B complex capsules to women and children.
