Carmel thrash St Xavier’s

A superb hat trick by Meghna Bhasin enabled Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, to beat St Xavier's-44 by 4-0 in a pool B match of the Chandigarh girls u-13 football meet for the RF Saupin Trophy. The meet is being held at Saupin's School, Sector 32.

Meghna Bhasin started her campaign aggressively and scored three goals in a row during the fifth, 10th and 12th minutes of the match.

Interestingly, in an attempt to obstruct the shot by Eketa Geisinger, Xavier's defender Anushka kicked the ball into her own goal. The Carmel team grabbed the match with a convincing win by 4-0 against Xavier’s team.

Meanwhile, the pool A match between hosts Saupin's School-32 and Sacred Heart-26 ended in a draw. While Niti Sood of Saupin’s School converted a spot kick in the fifth minute, Tanvi scored the equaliser for Sacred Heart in the 12th minute.

In another group A fixture, Mount Carmel School-47 garnered full points after beating Banyan Tree School-48 team by 2-0. Kirti scored the first goal in the fifth minute while Jagmohan Kaur scored another during the 15th minute.

In the last match of the day, Vivek High School-38 outclassed St Stephen's School-45 by 3-0. Shaira starred in Vivek's comfortable victory as she contributed two goals by scoring in the sixth and ninth minutes. Arushi completed Vivek's tally with a goal in the 15th minute.

Earlier, headmaster Amarbir Singh Sidhu inaugurated the tournament. Also present on the occasion was Saupin’s School chairman Pierre L. Saupin.

The Chandigarh Football Association officials will conduct special skill tests on the final day of the tournament i.e. on August 30 to select 25 probables for a coaching camp. The selected team will represent Chandigarh in the All-India Football Federation Girls’ U-13 Soccer Festival to be held at Puri from October 22 to 30.

Inter-district Cricket
Pushpinder shines in Bhiwani win

Chandigarh, August 28
Pushpinder of Bhiwani with his valuable 42 runs off 89 balls helped his team to win the two-day league match of the inter-district cricket between Chandigarh and Bhiwani.

The match was played at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here, today.

Bhiwani team scored 203 runs in the first innings, including 70 runs without loss on the first day, and got a lead of 36 runs.

Another batsman Pradeep Rawat, too, contributed remarkably (38 runs off 60 deliveries) but Mohit Chadha showed him the pavilion.

In second innings, Chandigarh scored 95 runs without losing any wickets. The opening partnership of Tanveer 51 (n o) and Rohit 37 (n o) resulted in a total of 88 runs. Even their fine partnership proved to be futile as the final verdict was given in favour of the Bhiwani team, which succeeded in grabbing one point.

Football trials tomorrow

Chandigarh, August 28
The Chandigarh Football Association will conduct trials to select 25 probables at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, on August 30 at 4.30 pm.

The selected players will form the team for the national football championship for boys u-16 to be held at Haldwani in Uttar Pradesh from September 16 to October 15.

The boys born on or after January 1, 1993, would be eligible for the trials.

Meanwhile, the All-India Football Federation has made it compulsory for the state units to conduct MRI of junior players before sending them for the nationals.

If three players of a state unit are found to be overaged during the medical tests conducted by the organisers, the defaulting team would be scraped from the nationals.

The federation has also laid down other strict penalties, including fine up to Rs 50,000 on the state associations for fielding overaged players.

PU to honour sportspersons

Chandigarh, August 28
The department of physical education of Panjab University will celebrate National Sports Day tomorrow.

A mini-marathon of students on the campus will mark the beginning of the day. Prof Naval Kishore, DSW (men), and Prof Paramjit Tewari, DSW (women), will be the chief guests.

The second event will commence at 11 am in the auditorium of the department of evening studies where vice-chancellor Prof R.C. Sobti will preside over a function to felicitate the sportspersons, who had brought laurels to the university last year by winning medals at the international, national and inter-university levels. — TNS

Eithika, Radhika fashion PML SD school win

Chandigarh, August 28
Eithika and Radhika of Pandit Mohan Lal SD Public School-32 with their 14 and 10 points, respectively, helped the host school register a one-sided win against Sharda Sarvhitkari Senior Secondary School-40 (26-08) on the second day of the eighth Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament on the school premises, here today.

The second match was played between Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School-22 and St Soldier School-28. Shishu Niketan won the match by 39-7. Gaurav scored 10 and Gurjot made eight points for their team.

DAV Public School-8 won the third match by thrashing Sharda Sarvhitkari Senior Secondary School-40 with a clear margin of 35-12. Digvijay (10) and Hardil (9) were the main contributors. — TNS

Mini Tennis
Mivaan, Seerat pocket titles

Mivaan and Seerat Sidhu won the boys’ and girls’ singles titles, respectively, in the Independence Day Mini Tennis Tournament being organised by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association at the CLTA stadium in Sector 10.

Mivaan beat Ashley Arora 15-13 while Seerat defeated Ashna Arora 15-13.
