Mobile explodes
: Panic gripped the area near the Golden Temple when a Nokia made mobile blew off, while charging on Thursday. This is reportedly the first incident reported in the holy city. The mobile belonging to an employee of a dhaba near the holy shrine blasted in the afternoon. However, no one was injured in the incident. It is pertinent to mention here that Nokia has issued a warning against such incidents due to the defective batteries BL-5C, and asked its consumers to approach any nearby Nokia centre for replacement.

BARNALA
Condemned:
Local private transporters on Thursday held a meeting to discuss incidents of violence by students. It was presided over by Kuldeep Singh Dhillon. The transporters condemned the incident on Wednesday in which the conductor and driver of a private bus were beaten up by students near Shaina village. They have urged the government to take steps to rein in violent students.

HOSHIARPUR
Booked for rape:
The Model Town police has booked Kamal Vinod Sharma, a resident of Panchkula, for allegedly raping a resident of Mohalla Pur Hiran on Thursday. The victim alleged that the accused had threatened her of killing her family if she did not meet him. The accused allegedly raped the young woman in a hotel room where they met and sent her back to her house the next morning on the promise that she would return in the evening, according to the complaint. No arrest has been made so far. 

Jalandhar
Nominated:
Dr K.B. Sharda, a local paediatrician, has been nominated as a member of a high-level committee of the Punjab health department regarding the PNDT Act by the Governor of Punjab.

Ludhiana
Onam celebrated:
The College of Nursing at the Christian Medical College here Onam, on Tuesday. The festivities started with a prayer and included different cultural dances and other activities organised by the students. Triza Jiwan, principal of the college, was the chief guest of the function while Peunamma Ranadive shed light on the message of Onam and its significance.

MOGA
Leaders booked: Nine persons from the Ram Vilas Paswan headed Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) were booked for violation of 144 CrPc on Thursday. The City police registered a case following directions from the deputy commissioner. The case was registered against the district president LJP Balkar Singh Kotla, Nirmal Singh Rajeana, Manjit Kaur, Jaspal Singh and five others. According to the FIR, the party workers violated 144 CrPc, by gathering to hold a protest, in force since the row between the Dera Sacha Sauda followers and the Sikhs broke out. 

Phagwara
2 found dead:
Two migrant labourers were found dead at two different places here on Thursday. The body of one labourer was found on the local Hoshiarpur road and the body of the other was found near the local bus stand. Both bodies were sent to the local civil hospital for post-mortem. 

Phillaur
4.28 lakh looted:
Two armed motorcycle-borne robbers took away Rs 4.28 lakh from a contractor, Harmeil Singh, resident of Lidrran village, on the Shankar-Aalowal road on Wednesday evening. In his complaint lodged with the Nakodar police, Harmeil Singh alleged that he was returning from Jalandhar Cantonment after withdrawing the amount from a bank in his car. The robbers broke a windowpane of the car by throwing a stone. When he stopped the car to see the broken glass, the robbers asked him to hand over the bag containing the cash on pistol point and took away the bag. A case has been registered.

Samrala
Charge taken:
Daljeet Singh Rana took over as the deputy superintendent of police on Wednesday. He has replaced Bhulla Singh, who has been transferred to the Central Vigilance HO, Chandigarh. Earlier, Rana was posted as the DSP at Bassi Pathana.

PU Result: Ms Randeep Kaur of Mate Gurdev Kaur Memorial Shahi Sports College of Physical Education, Jhakraudi has stood first in the Punjab University by securing 82.5% marks in the first year of B.P.Ed. The pass percentage of the college remains 87.5% according to Gurdev Singh, general secretary of the college, who congratulated Ramandeep Kaur and the staff of the college.

BILASPUR
Allowance:
The government has taken a policy decision and has made games and sports as a part of school activities throughout state and now daily food allowance of school sportspersons has also been increased to Rs 50 per day. Presiding over Bilaspur Sadar Girls High School’s annual tournament at Government high school, Panoh, near here on Wednesday, local MLA Tilak Raj Sharma said that government had increased the sports Budget several times and Rs 1.84 crore outdoor stadium was being constructed at Luhanu ground in Bilaspur town. 

Condemned: The district unit of the BJP here has condemned the police lathi-charge and stone throwing by the Congress workers on peaceful the demonstration of BJP workers at Shimla and has called it a murder of democracy. Addressing mediapersons here today, BJP district president Daulat Ram Thakur and Joint media in charge Vikram Sharma, accompanied by a number of leaders, said after this dictatorial action of the government, Virbhadra Singh had no right to continue as the Chief Minister of the state. 

Camp: Bilaspur Sadar Block Development Committee chairman Budhi Singh Thakur here, has exhorted youth to come forward to participate in all development activities in their areas and also to ensure success of all the government programmes which have been launched for welfare of people of state. Thakur was addressing and inaugurating a five-day social work camp organized by the Department of Sports and Youth Services at Surhad village near here on Wednesday. He also urged them to fight all social evils and exploitation of weaker sections of society.
