St Joseph's, Carmel in super league

St Joseph's School-44, Mount Carmel-47 (A and B teams) and GSSS, Khuda Lahora, qualified for the girls’ super league of the fourth Chandigarh junior state sepak takraw championship for the Santosh Kumar Rana Trophy. The tournament started at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here today.

In the boys section, DAV SSS-8, GMSSS, Sector 19-C (B), St Joseph's School-44, and Mount Carmel-47 (B) have moved into the super league.

Soccer Tourney
St Xavier’s, DPS enter semis

Panchkula, August 31
St Xavier's (Blues), Panchkula, Ryan International-49, Chandigarh, Delhi Public School (DPS), Pinjore, and Stone Brook School, Kalka, moved to the semifinals of the U-13 Chairman's Cup Soccer Tournament today.

The tournament is being organised by St Xavier's School, Panchkula, at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3. The meet was inaugurated by Panchkula deputy commissioner Neerja Shekhar.

Ankur Singh and Rahul Rana, scoring two goals each, were instrumental in St Xavier's victory over Gurukul, Panchkula, 4-0, in a quarter-final.

Ankur netted goals in the sixth and seventh minutes while Rahul Rana struck in the 10th and 20th minutes.

Meanwhile, Ryan International School defeated Holy Child of Panchkula by 3-1. A brilliant hat-trick by Piyush was the highlight of the match, who scored in the 10th, 35th and 39th minutes. The lone goal for Holy Child was scored by Pratanshu in the 13th minute.

Delhi Public School beat Alpine School, Pinjore, 2-0 to move into the last four. Both goals came in the first half. Abhinav and Chityajit scored in the fourth and eighth minutes.

In the last quarter-final match Stone Brook School of Kalka defeated Little Flower Convent School of Panchkula 1-0. The match-winner was scored by Nitin Kapoor in the fifth minute.

Kamboj is Twenty20 cricket body chief

I.D. Kamboj and Balbir Singh were elected president and general secretary, respectively, of the newly formed Association of Twenty20 Cricket (ATC), India, here today.

Earlier, Kamboj was senior vice-president of the Indian Twenty-20 Cricket Federation (ITCF).

“As the ITCF was not working on the guidelines set by its constitution, we decided to form this parallel body,” said Kamboj while talking to mediapersons.

“A total of 12 state twenty20 units are with us at the moment. We have decided to hold five national tournaments in different age groups in a span of one year. And the first one will be held in the city in October,” he added.

Kamboj also announced that no entry fee would be charged from the participating teams or the players during the tournaments.

Other office-bearers are:

Senior vice-presidents - H.S. Dhanoa, Prof Satish Gandhi, Manish Kapoor and Ramakant Bansode; vice-president - Naresh Kumar; working secretary - Namdeo Shirgaonkar; joint secretaries - Prof Vikas Tone, Parbhakar Kumar, Rajat Dikshit and Amarjit Kumar; finance secretary - Pankaj Gupta; executive members - Narinder Bansal, Sidharth Mahapatra and Suman Saini.

Badminton tourney from Sept 20

The Chandigarh Badminton Association will conduct the XIX Yonex State Badminton Championships at Sports Complex, Sector 42, from September 20 to 23.

Entries can be submitted to Sunil Bansal at the Panjab University gymnasium hall between 5 pm to 6.45 pm or to Vijay Sharma at Indoor Badminton Hall, Sports Complex, Sector 42, from 6 am to 8 am and 4 pm to 6 pm. The entries will close on September 17.

The competitions will be held in the following events: U-10: singles boy and girls; u-13: singles and doubles (boys and girls); u-16: singles and doubles (boys and girls); u-19: singles and doubles (boys and girls); seniors: singles and doubles (men and women); veterans (35 to 55 years): singles and doubles (men and women).

Trekking expedition flagged off

As a part of the ongoing diamond-jubilee celebrations to mark the Western Command’s Raising Day, a trekking expedition of the Territorial Army (TA) to the Pir Panjal ranges of Himachal Pradesh was flagged off by Major General-General Staff (MGGS), Western Command, Maj Gen H.P.S. Kler, from Chandi Mandir today.

Led by Capt Deepak Katoch, the expedition comprises troops of 155 Infantry Battalion (Jammu and Kashmir Rifles). They will trek through an arduous terrain from Parvati to Pin valleys of Himachal Pradesh, covering a distance of about 180 kms at an average altitude of 13,000 feet.

The members of the team had been trained since the third week of July through endurance runs, route marches with loads, power walking over river beds and yoga exercises. After a month's training they were moved to Palchan, an area close to Rohtang Pass, for rigorous training in the mountainous terrain.

National football tourney begins
Chandigarh to meet Orissa today

Hosts state-run Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) will take on Orissa Football Association (OFA) in the opening match of the fifth edition of the Administrator's Challenge Cup All-India Football Tournament for U-17 at Football Stadium, Sector 17, here at 4 pm tomorrow.

As many as 17 teams from across the country, including three local outfits- Chandigarh Football Association, New Public School Academy and Sanjay Public School Academy, are taking part in the tournament.

The teams have been divided into four pools. The winner of each pool will enter the semifinals.

All technical assistance will be provided by the Chandigarh Football Association.

Chandigarh administrator and Punjab Governor Gen S.F. Rodrigues will inaugurate the 10-day tourney.

Pool A: Chandigarh Football Academy, Orissa Football Association, Andhra Pradesh Football Association and Delhi Soccer Association.

Pool B: Punjab Football Association, Chhattisgarh Football Association, SAI Kolkata and Mahilpur Football Academy.

GMHS-43 lads pocket kho-kho title

Government Model High School, Sector 43, grabbed the u-14 boys’ Kho-kho title during the inter-school kho-kho tournament held at Sri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, here, today.

However, the hosts emerged winner in the u-17 boys’ semifinals with 18 points.

U-14 (boys) final:
1 GMHS-43, 2 GMHS-46, 3 SGGSSS-35.

Federation Cup from Sept 4

The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) has appointed Rakesh Bakshi, secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, as the chairman of the disciplinary committee for the Federation Cup to be held in Ludhiana from September 4 to 14.

Confirming the news, CFA president Ravinder Talwar said as many as 16 top professional teams are taking part in the meet.

The opening match will be held between JCT Phagwara and Vasco SC Goa on September 4 at 4 pm.

The second match of the day will be played under floodlights at 7 pm between East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting.

Netball trials today

The trials to select the Chandigarh netball girls team will be held at Saupin’s School, Sector 32, tomorrow.

According to R. Sharan, general secretary of the Netball Association of Chandigarh, the team will participate in the North Zone Netball Championship to be held at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, on September 8 and 9.
