PU sports dept to have new director soon
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 1
The Panjab University sports department is likely to have a new director soon. According to sources, vice-chancellor Prof R.C. Sobti may make the announcement regarding the appointment of a new director for the sports department in an executive meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

Earlier, the meeting was scheduled to held on August 31 but was postponed because of the VC’s visit to Kuala Lumpur.

When contacted, the existing sports director, Dr D.N. Jauhar, said, “I have given a written request to the VC to relieve me from this additional charge from September 1. He has assured me that he will do something about it in the forthcoming executive meeting.”

He further said looking after the department was a “full-time job” and needed someone, who would be there all the time. “As my academic as well as other obligations are getting affected, I find myself unable to do justice to this duty,” reasoned Dr Jauhar.

Besides discussing the normal agenda, the VC would interact with the members of the executive on the issue, added Dr Jauhar.

After the retirement of Ajmer Singh in 2000, the university could not appoint a regular director despite holding interviews for the post many a time.

“May be this time also someone will be given an additional charge but the department will get a regular director very soon,” said Dr Jauhar.
