Man beaten to death, cop suspended

Surinder Singh of Dala village was beaten to death allegedly by employees of a gaushala and the police here yesterday.

According to sources, employees of the gaushala, run by a society, and police personnel mercilessly thrashed Surinder to death on the charge that he wanted to steal some cows. They alleged that he was accompanied by two accomplices. They said on their arrival Surinder tried to escape but was caught. He was then set upon and thrashed.

The police which was called also joined them in thrashing him, sources said. Surinder fell unconscious. They arranged a vehicle for taking him to hospital. However, on the way they found that he had died. They left the body in the vehicle and fled.

The sources drew attention to the photographs in vernacular dailies which showed Surinder tied with a rope and employees of Gaushala and policemen in uniform standing beside him.

A case of murder has been registered on the complaint of the deceased’s wife Surinder Kaur against unknown persons. She mentioned in the complaint that her husband had been unemployed for sometime and added that he had gone in search of work.

Davinder Singh Garcha, SSP, said that on the basis of photographs head constable Guljar Singh had been suspended.
