Udaipur, September 7
At least 72 pilgrims were killed and over 130 wounded when a truck carrying them fell into a gorge near Desuri Ki Naal village in Rajsamund district, about 150 km from here, tonight.
DIG Udaipur Rajeev Dasot, who was on way to the accident site, confirmed that 72 persons had died while rescue operation was in full swing.
The accident occurred when the truck driver lost control over the wheels while negotiating a turn at Punjabi Mode near Daisuri-ki-Nal and the vehicle smashed through a protective wall on the road and hurtled into the gorge, Rajsamund district Superintendent of Police Rupinder Singh said over phone.
About two hundred persons were travelling on the ill-fated trailor, which was on way to Ramdevra temple in Jaisalmer district when the mishap took place.
So far, 72 bodies have been pulled out of the gorge but their identification is yet to be made, he added.
