Fulfil challenges set by Constitution, says Guv
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 8
Stating that introspection is the need of the hour, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd) said it was essential to produce professionals who are competent, caring and who have a dream for India. He was speaking at the inauguration of Block-II of the Department of Laws at Panjab University, today.

Narrating how the Union of India was formed by integrating sub-national identities into one state, he stressed upon the importance of making ourselves worthy of the state in which we live. “Our Constitution was formulated at a time of tremendous turmoil in the country. But the makers drew on some reserve of strength and humanity and constructed the fundamental rights. While our Constitution has withstood the test of time, are we worthy of that inheritance, and what have we done to take it forward?” he asked.

He said students needed to focus on three things - “You, your conscience and your God.” He added that transparency, openness and an honest approach in every field of activity was necessary to live up to the challenges set by our Constitution and heritage.

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti, in his welcome address, said the Department of Laws was one of the premier institutions of legal education.

Chairman Shashi K. Sharma came in for some fulsome praise as a strict teacher who believed in maintaining law and order in his department. He spoke of taking education worldwide, giving the example of the exchange programme within the department with the European Law Students’ Association.

He said with the addition of this new block, the department would make great strides to strengthen and improve the qualitative components of the course, giving it a more practical feel.

Adding to this, Professor Sharma said within a month, the hall of the new block would be created into a mock courtroom with a real-life appeal to motivate students. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by DUI Prof S.K. Kulkarni.

Deprived of education, 10 girls ‘steal the show’
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 8
At the Don Bosco Navjeevan Centre, it was a day to celebrate the girl child. But when 10 underprivileged girls from the city walked up to the visiting official - coordinator, Chandigarh Child Protection Programme Raji P. Shrivastava, their only request was to be allowed to attend school.

A routine social function was made special by the reality check by these girls, who complained that their parents weren’t providing them with the opportunity to get educated.

“Our education is not their concern. They would rather that we helped with household chores. But we want to study,” the girls said when Shrivastava, also special secretary, finance, UT, asked if there was anybody in the audience who was facing problems at home or otherwise. Finally getting their chance to be heard, the girls submitted Shrivastava with a list, which would now be used to reach out to their parents.

“It is matter of concern that parents are not ready to educate their children despite the facility of free education. Now that we know of the problem, we will do everything to solve it. I will send my counsellors to the homes of these girls so that a solution is found and their education is not affected,” she said.

Earlier, slum and street children staged skits on female foeticide and discrimination against the girl child. Based on humble scripts by the children themselves, the plays communicated the messages effectively. The show was coordinated by Father Sebastian of the centre, who is also helping the Administration with a special project concerning street children.

The Operations Cell of Chandigarh Police has arrested a woman, who hitched rides from car drivers and drugged them before robbing them. The woman used to spot single men driving cars and hitched rides from them and had robbed over 16 persons, including some well-to-do persons in this fashion.

The accused, a 40-year-old widow Kamaljit Kaur, alias Sunita, was arrested by the personnel operation cell from Sector 17, ISBT on Friday following information. She was arrested after being identified by one of her victims. Kamaljit is a mother of two minor daughters.

Sources in the operation cell said, “The investigating officials are facing a peculiar problem in this matter as the complainants tend to conceal the facts to save face. Majority of her victims, are those who had fallen in her trap considering her to be a call-girl.

Citing one such case, sources said one of her victims took her to his house in Sector 43, where she served him drinks laced with intoxicants and robbed his entire house. She reportedly decamped with Rs 20,000, two gold chains, two gold bangles, two rings and other articles. The incident took place last week. Theatre lover marches on against odds
Aditi Tandon
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 8
Ram Gopal Bajaj would have reversed the fortunes of Indian theatre if he had the power to do so.

But he feels restricted. Looking back on his life as actor-director, he can’t recall a single moment that came without its share of struggles.

“Our dreams of taking theatre to the nook and corner of India are in pieces. Never has the position of theatre been so shaky. There is no money in the discipline; no government aid or hope of it. I have been struggling with productions. With help, I could have contributed more,” says former director of the National School of Drama (NSD), who pioneered children’s theatre movement from the NSD which he headed from 1995 to 2001.

The national theatre festival was also his gift to the NSD. But ever since he left the NSD, nothing seems to have changed for the better.

“NSD was conceived as an adult education project. It was to inspire a nursery of theatre institutions across the country. The idea was to tap every child’s natural ability to act and use it to hone his cognitive skills. It’s a shame that after 60 years of freedom, theatre has no space in the education canvas of a child,” he rued.

On his part, Bajaj has been labouring on. Starting as a student of Ebrahim Alkazi at the NSD, he graduated to create over 30 productions as director, and 36 productions as actor.

To his name are awards like the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Padma Shri, and yet there’s that reigning listlessness over things gone wrong.

Bajaj was last seen in the Jackie Chan starrer “The Myth”.

He is now planning a couple of more plays, some even for the Chandigarh audience.

The most exciting of them is “Laila Majnu” by London-based playwright Ismail Chunara.

“Chunara has treated this timeless love saga with indescribable passion. I will produce its Urdu translation. I am also planning a production around playwright Kamla Kapoor’s works. But the progress will be slow, and you know why,” said the thespian who is in the city to attend the Haryana cultural department’s annual theatre festival.
